i used to post on ign's mgs forum. i remember everyone was all ''omg that trailer is fake because the sniper sounds exactly like the handgun'' when that mgs3 trailer bit was leaked
Oh shit, and that one moderator (can't remember his name) immediately called it being a prequel about Big Boss in his prime.
Sad that that board become one giant league of cocksuckers. The people in the "community discussion thread" all formed one big clique that decided what the acceptable opinions were. One of them even claimed to have been the first person on IGN to dislike Twin Snakes.
I even still remember when the MGS3 character bios got leaked from a talent place, along with some storyboard sketches. People were freaking out about "Thunderbolt" (Volgin) and insane shit like The Pain ("he shoots bee bullets from his mouth") and The Sorrow ("he is a ghost who can summon the dead").
Some tried to say it was fake because KOJIMA-SAMA would never do anything like that. Others tried to defend it because KOJIMA-SAMA IS A GENIUS, JUST LOOK AT THE PAST GAMES.
Them: "Is a man covered in bees who can shoot bee bullets from his mouth REALLY any weirder than a psychic Russian, or a Romanian who dances and drinks blood, or a Native American who talks with raven spirits?"
Me: "Uh, yeah, this much much weirder and dumber than any of those guys. They at least followed cultural tropes."
Them: "WELL HOW DO YOU KNOW, PERHAPS IN JAPANESE CULTURE THERE IS THE STORY OF A BEE-COVERED SOLDIER WHO SHOOTS BEES, JUST LIKE WE HAVE STORIES ABOUT BIGFOOT, TO THE JAPANESE WE WOULD SEEM WEIRD AND STUPID."
of course then mgs3 came out and all the bosses (except The Boss) really
were dumb as shit and undeveloped but they only defended it for like two months or so before they admitted it
