PD you are the person who said they cried while reading Harry Potter, so much so you had to put the book down to regain composure to keep reading. You have no room to mock Twilight wackos.

There's a difference between being moved to tears by compelling prose and lusting over romance novel characters  :tophat

Stephen King has sold over 300 million books, apparently. I kinda like Stephen King a bit.  He's produced a significant amount of crap, but his good stuff is generally pretty darned good.  Also, he's actually pretty good with prose, which is kind of a rarity.

I've read few King books, not overwhelmed but the guy actually is a talented person who's found the profession he should be doing.

Just because he's able to shit them out without years of gut-wretching inner-turmoil between books doesn't automatically mean that his books are awful.

Twlight however, is complete twaddle.

His short stories, especially his earlier ones, are excellent.  I think he fits in with the greats of short story writing.

The Stand is fucking awesome and I remember reading Fire Starter back in HS. The imagery is still with me. I think the next one I'll read from him is The Shining.

I think King is someone who's incapable of writers block. He'll have an itch to sit down at his desk whether he's working on an inspired idea or just going through the motions because nothing else is bubbling up in his brain.

Anyone being introduced to his stuff would be helped by a guide to separate the wheat from the chaff.

No matter what, he's still far removed from jackholes like Dan Brown or Michael Crichton.

Get Night Shift!  Like 20 excellent short stories.  Skeleton Crew is almost as good, too.  I love it when he does Lovecrafty shit like Jerusalem's Lot and Gramma.

It's not complete crap but the earlier books had a nice disjointed feel as he'd written them years and years apart that somehow acutally works in their favor. The later ones (actually I've only really read 5 & 6 still waiting on 7) were written in such a rush that I think if he'd actually known he wasn't a step away from dieing he wouldn't have written them in such haste and would've let them been better.

As TVC said, Stephen King's short stories are the best. Just two of them turned into fuck awesome movies:

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption (Shawshank Redemption)
The Body (Stand By Me)

When Stephen King trashed the writer of that Twilight crap it was awesome:
Quote
"I think that has some kind of formative influence the same way reading Richard Matheson had an influence on me," King explains. "People always say to me, 'Well, what about H.P. Lovecraft?' And the thing was, you read Lovecraft when you were a kid but I never felt that he was speaking my language. It was chillier than my heart was, and when Matheson started to write about ordinary people and stuff, that was something that I wanted to do. I said, 'This is the way to do it. He’s showing the way.' I think that I serve that purpose for some writers, and that’s a good thing. Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. ... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."

The academic world needs to recognize this obsession with all-things-asian as a mental disorder and include it in the DSM. Reminds me of Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now.

Except for Cloudwalking and her obsession with Switzerland, I just don't see people online obsessing about European countries, which tend to have rich histories and cultures, too, as I do with Asian countries--specifically Japan and to a lesser extent South Korea. Is it the anime? Videogames? Pocky? Petite women? Cramped apartments?

I know quite a few Anglophiles actually...

Comparing Twilight to HP is a joke. I've never harshly slammed Twilight because I know it wasn't written for me. I've made fun of Harry Potter fanatics, I feel perfectly comfortable making fun of Twilight fanatics

On the one hand, it's a song almost every Japanese person knows cuz it's drilled into their heads.  On the other hand, he fucked it up by singing 'Thursday' twice.  And on final analysis, it's HULK FREAKING HOGAN SINGING A CHILDREN'S SONG WHILE HOLDING AN AIR CONDITIONER.

This country never stops being weird.

The Tommy Lee Jones commercials where he's an alien trying to fit in with Japanese society are the best ever:

I don't know wtf happened, but with the help of Grooveshark, bittorrents, megadownload and Last.fm, i've found so many fucking new bands in the past couple of days. I'm in the middle of a musical renaissance.

I'm bored to fuck of videogames, so now I'm like full on back in to music.

I didn't know what Grooveshark was until you mentioned it, and I'm like "holy shit this is like Seeqpod but with a far better interface."  So, uh, thanks! :)
