I heard Wollan was Hans.  I never ventured into threads about games I'm never going to play, unless there is some stealth troll potential.  For the most part I miss out on the clinicaly insane posters.   The NPD thread is a grim reminder every month though.  I kinda wish the numbers were posted followed by immediate topic lock, the little tidbits we get are getting scarcer and I have to wade through ten pages of doomsaying to get a frigging top 20.

The gaming side is going to shit IMO because:

- PS3 Slim.  Sony fans started to get a little saner until the Slim and its price point was announced.  It re-awakened their inner distinguished mentally-challenged fellow, which has laid dormant for months now.  Most of them believe there are tens of millions people waiting to get a PS3 because of an aesthetics change (some people have argued this!) and a price point that is the first time remotely competitive.  I think it will do well but as usual, the typical Sony set have vastly overestimated how much people want to play Uncharted 2.

- Wii sales.  Wii sales have seen huge drop offs.  Nintendo fans are full on damage control, including justifying why it is still $250, the still anemic software lineup, and debating why third parties aren't all Wii exclusive.  Cue posts from guys like Jokeropia who are ready to correct anyone who gets software figures wrong like anyone really gives a fuck if a game sold 1.2 million instead of 1.1 million (not the real numbers, just an example)

- 360 fans on full defense.  I think Mass Effect 2 and Halo ODST look extremely boring.  With the slim out, it is time to defend their system.  I don't follow Xfags because most of the games they hype are boring sci-fi affairs.  As a result, I don't know how bad the Xfag camp is or who their top leaders are.

You're behind the times man! They stopped "debating" that ages ago. Now its all about alleging that there is a vast anti-Wii conspiracy going on that is the cause of the Wii not getting every game in the universe and why every bad Wii review is null and void.

Also I agree that the PS3 slim is the cause of the new influx of stupidity on gaf (well that and all the new juniors they got). Hope simply breeds stupidity.

Wii sales are fine considering economic conditions.  If I'm not mistaken if you looked at sales figures from last gen the ps2 wasnt pulling astronomical numbers this time of year either.  The misconception is that the Wii was setting records for years straight and now that sales have normalised anything compared to its best years looks fucking pathetic.  I do think a price drop is required to get back up to those insane levels.  My theory is that Nintendo wanted to release Nsmb Wii, WSR, and WiiFit + to see if they could sustain the numbers without resorting to cutting the price.

Yeah, it was way ahead of its time, especially when it came to technology. I really enjoyed it for what it was, even though the game tended to come apart at the seams every now and then.

I was skimming through those threads, which was simple since a lot of the posts were gifs, and yeah, it's pretty weird.  It's like, 90% of the time you see people saying "oh, it didn't sell well first day, but it will have legs! that's what matters" then you have a situation like this, where people proclaim victory because of four days.  If it continues to sell, cool, more power to them.  If it doesn't, that sucks, whatever.  But yeah, I dunno, it's good that it sold I guess.  I don't have a reason to not want it to sell well.  Low or high sales, as long as they continue providing games I enjoy, I'm good with that.

Nintendo fans these days just seem confused. For a whole generation, they wanted nothing more than to see Nintendo back at the top. Now Nintendo is there, but by way of odd peripherals and budget price, budget performance hardware. Loving Nintendo must make for a complicated affair these days.

I dunno, I just haven't really kept track of this gen's console wars too well, especially since here on the Bore we don't put up with that shit.  I find it hard to believe that people have such a hard time accepting that a console that launched at $600 and has no games DESERVES to be in third place, but I guess that's just the reasonable dude in me talking. 

Then again, back in the day there was no reason for Team Nintendo to not be able to accept that they finished last with a toy looking console that had no games anyone wanted to play other than maybe a gay looking Zelda game.

Fucking EXACTLY.  I had all three consoles at one point last gen (while I was working at GS) and I have since decided NEVER AGAIN.  I am so much happier with this gen since I decided to be lazy and jump in after the prices got reasonable and there was a steady backlog of games to play.  I'll pretty much only own one console from now on, well two I guess if you count the ol' REPUBLIC OF GAMERS as a platform.  If MS shits the bed next gen I have no problem hopping back into bed with Sony, or even Nintendo if they put out current tech... yeah right.

I don't think they derive pleasure from it. It's just a shaking of the finger at companies.

And Sony fans have always been the worst. Nintendo fans were barely visible on the forum last gen, so to bring them up into a 'worst' fan conversation is a sign of company hatred. After the GC's first year and it's sales letdown, Nintendo fans were trolled off the forum. Most of the better posters stopped posting. What you have now are mostly new Nintendo fans on NeoGAF that arrived with the Wii.

Also, banning the silly trolls and keeping the serious posters is not the problem with GAF. Those things needed to be banned because they derailed threads over and over. There was no chance for a higher level of gaming discussion to occur when someone could pop in and proceed to spread pointless jackassery.

GAF's problem was that it became huge because it allowed rumors, it allowed itself to be a dark alley where whispers and tidbits could flow, and those in the know could let NDAs and undisclosed images out. Then the Administration got serious and now GAF is no longer the quickest, best source for news or inside info.  It's just a gaming forum that repeats news from elsewhere, that plays by the same rules as everyone else. It wanted to be more... professional I suppose, but it lost all the advantages it previously had. This leaves only console bickering and some forms of analysis. And as much as y'all hate sales charts, sales analysis is a higher thought usage than most typical gaming threads. Unfortunately there's not much else.

Granted, that plan kinda went to shit along with Team Ninja's games.  The point is, even when I was a kid, I'd switch back and forth between all the consoles, once they got cheap enough.  Depends all on the games, not my projected emotions.

I think Sony fans are much worse now than the Nintendo fans at their low point.

It is understandable.  PS2 was the undisputed champion.  Then with PS3, it dropped down to third place.  Anything that remotely gives it a chance to overtake the 360 worldwide is treated with frothing at the mouth enthusiasm, accompanied with frothing at the mouth trolling of the 360.  The fact that it does have a chance to do that makes it even worse.  GC fans wanted it to overtake PS2 but it had no serious shot and wasn't taken seriously or with the burning vitriol that is present in the PS3 fanboy set.

Nintendo fans are obnoxious but their fanboyism is more of a naive/childlike logic.  Sony fans tend to be far more vicious than a Nintendo fan, whose worse attacks amount to little more than "you're a poopyhead."  I have yet to see a Nintendo fan spam a major publisher's forum with tubgirl and pictures of maimed people like Sony fans did.  Even worse, they did that only because of the suspicion that EA might have held pressured Sony into gimping a firmware feature.  That is almost solid proof right there than Sony fans have proven themselves to be worse.

Nintendo fans haven't really changed much.  They're still blind yes-men and think Iwata is the greatest business genius of all time with Blue Ocean Strategy being the best scheme of all time.  The problem with them lies with the disconnect that publishers are releasing games on it that sell to that kind of demographic.  They believe grandmas and soccer moms would buy Resident Evil 5.  They're having a hard time understanding that because party/exercise games do so well on the system, that publishers are releasing more party/exercise games.

I don't know much about the Microsoft fans because again, I don't really follow their threads.  I don't care much for Science Fiction, which means I don't care about Mass Effect, Halo, Shadow Complex, etc.  So I don't get the complete picture.

I agree with Willco, its dumb to have console loyalty.  Once my 360 breaks down and Microsoft refuses to repair it for free, I'm defecting to the Republic of Gamers.  I don't really like how the future of console gaming involves waggling (Wiimote, Glowing Dildo) or gesticulating (Natal).
