One of my oldest friends, who's a little bit slow, was pranked by his younger twin brothers when we were kids. They told him that their father found him in a dumpster next to a couple of cute kittens, and that he stood there for a while trying to decide "cats... or a baby". They went as far as telling him that every time he screwed up their dad would mumble "I knew I should have chosen those kittens".

Poor dude bought the story, got depressed for a couple of days, cried actually on more than one occasion. When his parents found out they (barely) were able to convince him otherwise after showing him a lot of pics they took of him when he was a newborn still at the hospital.

Seriously though, that's all perspective. To humans, yea, we think we're more important to the world than anything else. GAF's argument is that if we had a choice between saving an animal or saving a person, we should save the person. Why? Because we said so? We're biologically "animals" ourselves. What makes a human better than an animal? Because we have more capacity to fuck up the world, like we do on an hourly basis?

I don't know, I guess if you look at the bigger picture of the world, really, we have no more of a "right" to be here as anyone or anything else.

No, because we have a capacity to anticipate and consider the future in a way no other animal can as far as we know. Don't know if it makes us 'better', but it does make us different in the way we experience pain and death. That said, I also thinks this puts a burden on us to not be cruel to animals, especially those that feel pain.

I don't know man... I had a stupid fucking bird [seriously, he's an asshole] that would start squawking when we were on our way home. I'd know my mom was coming home within 5 minutes based on how the bird acted, before the dogs could hear the car or she'd even be in the subdivision. Coincidence over a now 15+ year time span? Who fucking knows? We really don't know what capacity animals have for sure. All species have their pros and cons. Better senses, faster reaction times, etc. etc. etc. We might be able to stand upright and talk (both of which aren't exclusive to us), but so what? Maybe dog farts are what are really powering the world, but us stupid humans haven't figured it out yet.

Regardless of if we have this capacity or not, we aren't using our abilities for the Earth's benefit, just our own. So really, the world would probably be better off without us.

And yes, jellyfish feel pain. The Dead Milkmen even wrote a song, Jellyfish Heaven, which "is a place where jellyfish go to get away from Mormons and drunk eskimos." I hear "it's a lot like L.A." Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

euh, ok. That bird does not anticipate or consider the future in a self reflective and self conscious way like humans do. It doesn't set goals or has dreams or anticipate a future state of themselves or of others through empathy. We can't know for sure for sure, but all evidence points to no and it's all we have. I'm saying this relates to how humans feel and experience pain and death and the pain and death of others, especially those they're related to. I think this is a pretty good basis for deciding who to save in a given situation. In no way does this justify exploitation or animal cruelty, on the contrary.

Nature/earth doesn't care wether species die or live, only we do and it's in our concern only, wether for survival or esthetic reasons. (which are both pretty good reasons as far as I'm concerned)

Afaik Jellyfish don't feel pain as they don't have a central nervous system.

Meh. The whole thing was really silly so I don't want to turn it into some big deal. Certainly part of my gimmick over there is going after fanboys or people who can't take criticism on viewpoints they hold. So in that sense I'm always in danger of stirring shit up and getting banned and sometimes arguably it is justifiable for a ban to be fair. In this case it was Evilore and Amirox attacking Giant Bomb because the quick look wasn't overly praising of said game. So I mocked them in a couple of posts. The ban posting said they were "tired of my elitism". Now of course my opinion is that you won't find two more elitist mods than those two but hey, we are all entitled to our opinion. Their site. Their rules.

I thought Amir0x was pretty chilled out about people mocking him.  I think Boogie tears him a new asshole on a regular basis and gets away with it.  You are probably established and respected enough to get away with a little bit of rule bending, which seems odd why you got banned.  Oh well, it is just a month.

Speaking of which, I need to take a sabbatical away from GAF.  I've been doing way too much Sony trolling.  PSP Go appears to be fair game for mockery but a few of my PS3 comments might bite me in the ass.  Sony fans are declaring victory before a full month's NPD results are posted.  It is ridiculous.  A dude today suggested that numbers no longer matter when it comes to Sony's newfound victory.  At least in the past they used the Ferrari excuse but they at least relied on quantitative data; now they are proposing they ditch the idea of previous sales numbers.  Apparently the PS3 Slim's launch date was a virtual reset to 0 for console sales this generation.  I guess this generation has officially started.  November 2005 to August 24, 2009 was just practice and didn't really count.
