Playstation Home, Harrison's leaked keynote, rumble is next-gen again, Kotaku gets blackballed, etc. Here's the info. in case you missed it:

Keynote at GDC March 7th 2007:

Anouncements:

Firmware update available on the 8th for North America/Japan and Asia. European PS3's will be preloaded with this latest update.

Features of this latest firmware include:

More refined PS Store frontend
Playstation Network integrity enhanced
Wallpapers from pictures
Ability to change background colours
Sony Connect Store for music and movies added to the PS Store. Hundreds of trailers/full films/song videos and mps3's available for download.
Playstation Card option in PS Store enabled.
Playstation Lifestyle- Similar to my space/youtube. User generated content and experiences are the key.

Removal of Emotion Engine chips in PS3's in NA and Japan to follow in April. Reason for this is to reduce costs and focus on enhanced opportunities via software. Benefits include the ability to upscale selected PSone/PS2 games to 1080i/720p.

Lots of development talk.
Release dates for key games. Warhawk in June/July 2007. Heavenly Sword delayed. Killzone and MGS4 in late 2007.

Hell, even with a pay service psn will continue to suck. Sony is HORRIBLE at online stuff, no matter what. Have you guys ever played a sony mmo? HORRIBLE.

Playstation home combines mii's and achievements, some games have trophies, you find said trophies, have fuck virtual catologue, that people can browse in rooms of, with real-time video streaming in the background, this is apparantly what the 60 MB more of the OS uses.

i find it hard to believe that this is all going to be implemented painlessly. i really hate PSN firmware updates. especially the "plug in your controller" bullshit. expect more growing pains to come.

What the hell is with Sony lately? First all the shit with Phil Harrison picking getting picky over supposed "selective quoting" that's been reported on GameSetWatch, and now Dave Karraker is refusing to give Kotaku access to them? I'm not fan of Kotaku - I respect Crecente as a journalist, but I think they have disturbingly low standards as a site, and fall back on the "oh but we're bloggers" excuse just a little too often - but Sony are looking amazingly defensive right now. It's very, very weird.

PS3 is this generations GCN. Go ahead, enjoy it, many sony fans and 3-console owning gamers will. But it will appeal to a small niche and its owners will be very senstive about that, much like GCN owners were.

dc numbers were like 50k a month, ps3 is doing much better than that. Not enough to get passed 3rd place but not DC, not by a longshot

Why? It will sell along those lines. You didn't personally create GCN. It was in third place! So will PS3. How does this affect you?

I just did an interview with an Irish singer songwriter, who commented of the Australian political state at the moment:

“It feels at the moment like the last days of Thatcher, where she went insane and imploded. I’m sure it’s the same thing – when you’re too corrupt, and you’ve had power for too long, it just falls apart in the end. It’s very Shakespearean.”

I can't help seeing a lot of that in Sony's recent actions. It feels like they're just struggling to hold it together.

It sounds good for existing owners, but I don't really think this'll help them that much in the marketplace without the games to support it, and without a price drop. I don't know one person out of my group of friends and acquaintances (who almost universally owned PS1s and PS2s) who can justify spending the $600 on it. Nor do I know anybody who is even the slightest bit interested in hi definition movies; for the average person, they are fine with their 480i/p DVDs.

The fact that they're switching out the Emotion Engine for emulation means that backwards compatibility will be further screwed up...
