Don't most people watch TV shows because they want to have something to discuss with their family/friends and don't want to be "left out of the loop", and because it shallowly makes them feel like they belong in society?

Sure there are a bunch of series worth watching, but with all the hype it's hard to know what's truly worthy of one's time. If you wait a few years you can cherry pick the great from the bad and enjoy uninterrupted bliss with none of these nagging commercials.

When you're not conditioned to eagerly await resolves for cliffhangers in next week's episode and instead have the possibility to view all the episodes back to back, you can be more level-headed and recognize quality when you see it.

Viewing the news is continuously depressing and it's more rewarding and intellectually stimulating with a medium as deep and interactive as the web. Not to mention that the music and the choice of content in reports and in commercials often convey troubling subliminal suggestions. Now you can select information that is truly tailored on what kind of actuality you crave for.

Television entertains and educates, but to extremely minimal levels. It's quite possibly the biggest factor that makes modern citizens turn to sheeps when they could be educated and think for their own selves instead.

My HDTV is never used for anything else than pre-recorded video material and games.

The only thing that I really watch is House. I love that show. I also started watching Scrubs recently because my fiend of a friend kept sending me youtube links to scenes from the show. Besides those two shows, I don't watch shit unless I'm at a friend's house and they're watching something.

If I had a dvr I would enjoy tv more. I dont watch much but when I watch a show like say heroes I'm annoyed by the constant commercials. I like watching the discovery and history channel the most as it seems there is always an interesting show on and they dont batter me with commercials.

Internet >tv any day.

I still watch TV. And I watch shows that none of my friends/coworkers do. I admit I got into BSG so I wouldn't be left out at work, but most of the rest of stuff I watch on TV I watch because it appeals to me, not because I have anyone to discuss it with.

Heroes, Studio 60, 24, Boston Legal, The Office, 30 Rock, Battlestar Galactica are the shows I watch.

so yes I watch tv. TV is at it's best in over 10 years now.

TV sucks but the internet isn't that great either. If I spend more than two hours a day either watching TV or on the internet, I know I'm wasting my time.

Smallville ever had more than 3 viewers?

Lost is still pretty popular it seems though. I hear people talking about in my office building, but just no one I know.

And yeah, and I've never even heard anyone mention the office episodes. They've all heard of it, but never watched it.

Smallville is doing fine in ratings. Its the CW's top show. Doesnt really matter though, since its done next year either way.

People watch tv because they like to be entertained, and because tv has been getting quality programming in the past years, which caused the death of reality tv.

I don't watch tv because i dont have time, but pretending that tv sucks nowadays is simply foolish.

I didn't pretend that it sucked, just that I had no incentive to watch it. And that I don't think it's worth it to become addicted to the episodic nature of TV series that force you to be in front of the screen at the same hour and at the same day on every week. If a plot is captivating why wait to see the rest?

Not exactly sure why things are this way, many here talk about quality TV programming but still none of the series for which I've read the hype on places like OA and GAF compel me. It doesn't look like any of them are especially unique and entertaining. Despite all the overwhelmingly positive impressions the premises leave me unimpressed. Maybe that there are only so many great ways to tell a story in a mini-series with current American themes.

The only series that I would maybe feel compelled to watch would be Six Feet Under and Rome, but then again the latter hasn't ended.

All of you guys watch these shows as they are broadcast, commercials and all? I only do that with Lost. Everything else comes from alt.binaries.multimedia.

The original poster seems to advocate waiting for TV box sets, but that's just distinguished mentally-challenged. You only get new content once a year, and you burn through it in a month at the slowest.....then 11 months of nothing. TV is fun because it's engaging week after week. Plus you're going to be at least a year behind the fanbase -- so there's not much opportunity to experience the social aspects of following a favorite show.

I dunno, before pirating a show on a weekly basis, I at least like to have a season's worth of episodes so I can tell if the show is really worth it.

I just watch reality TV. American Idol, Flip This House, America's Next Top Model, Mythbusters, History Channel ... stuff like that. I can't watch pretty people in scripted, semi-realistic situations anymore. It's just too boring for me.

I enjoyed Vegas for a few years, because it was unpretentious fun. But stuff like CSI, Grey's Anatomy (OMG sex in the hospital!) and Law and Order is just all shit that has been done 20 years ago and everyone carries on like it's great TV.

I actually stopped watching TV from 1999-2002. Didn't really miss it (except for NFL playoffs).
