Thirdly I watched Infernal Affairs first a couple of years ago and then watched The departed last year, it was the same exact movie but with a western setting, now I always thought the point of a remake is to do something the last movie couldn't do visually (peter Jacksons King Kong) or  because the overall story had  an extremely strong cultural presence  (the up and coming remake of the Korean movie "My sassy girl" must see BTW) the original was fairly new (2002), was easily accessible and had neither of these problems. The quality of the departed wasn't bad its just that after watching the original it was IMO held up much better and convey situations in a better way via a really good cast, better direction and a brilliant soundtrack.
