Nip/Tuck rules
« on: March 04, 2007, 05:25:17 PM »
I just started watching this after a few recommendations from MAF.  I've watched the first 4 episodes, and the show is absolutely ridiculous and over-the-top.  The writers have to know how ridiculous it is, and although there are some intentionally humorous bits, some of the more dramatic plotlines are played so straight as to be even funnier.  This is going to be high camp in 10 years.

So after the first 4 episodes, we have a several episode plot arc about a gerbil getting flushed down a toilet in a fit of anger, snorting coke off of a slut's back during sex, a "teenager" (with permanent 5 o' clock shadow) trying to circumcize himself via instructions from a self-circumcision website, over-the-top cringey surgery scenes, multiple sex scenes per episode, child molestor druglords getting surgery, liposuction disasters, sex, awkward breast examinations, feeding corpses to gators, botox to the dick, sex with old people. . .and I can probably go on and on.  I have no idea how long the show can maintain this level of bizarro quality, but 4 hours in, this box set has already paid for itself.  I honestly don't know what to expect next.  This is my first fx show, and I will never again doubt that they can do awesome television.  I will check out the Shield.

Its like they made the show specifically for you. I was surprised you hadn't seen much of it. :lol

I kind of wrote FX shows off after watching HBO and Showtime shows.  I figured they just couldn't compare, due to no nudity and restricted language, but they definitely do well with what they have.  Does the show ever "jump the shark," or are you not familiar enough with it?

The fourth season wasn't so hot, as it felt like they were taking things more seriously and there were some corny experiments like the episode that flashes forward 20 years.  I guess you would appreciate the Scientology subplot, though even that seemed like it was written without a lot of research.  Jacqueline Bisset was hot at least.

Season 2-3 is probably the best the show will get.  Season 2 is probably the pinnacle, though some would probably rate S3 better if they have a hardon for Rhona Mitra or The Carver storyline.  I still haven't seen about half of Season 1, but generally pieced together its main plot arc from the random reruns on FX.

The show will IMO be back in form for Season 5 though, what with the doctors in LA.  It must be getting really expensive to shoot in Miami, since both Nip/Tuck and Dexter are moving back to Hollywood for filming.

Well, I'm only 4 episodes into season 1, but it seems like Nip/Tuck doesn't make as much use of Miami as a setting as Dexter does.  Nip/Tuck I can see being in any bigass city.  Dexter, I have a problem with that not being in Miami.  Does the book take place in Miami, too?

Out of curiosity, why do they go to Miami in Nip/Tuck?

Darkly Dreaming Dexter takes place in Miami, though it doesn't have a very strong sense of place.

Do you mean to ask why the characters went to LA?  Or why they ended up in Miami?  The answer to the former is no big spoiler, but I wouldn't blurt it out unless I'm clear on what you're asking.

Oh, brain fart.  I mean why are they going to LA.

In terms of stories, I guess the show's heads must want to try out a plastic surgeon to the stars angle.

Christian gets sick of the practice and the ultimately shitty situation he's created for himself throughout Season 4, and moves to LA to join a large practice.  Sean wants to work alone, but after doing that for a while realizes he's unhappy.  He goes to LA and proposes that the two of them start a practice there.  Then there is a goofy gay montage with the guys hanging around in front of the giant "Hollywood" sign (can people actually go there?).

The promising thing isn't the new setting, so much as it is the fact that both of them appear to have left behind the rest of their family.  Hopefully a lot of the family melodrama (particularly Sean's piece of shit kid) has been laid to rest.  I hope they don't fall into the trap of getting celebrity guest stars to play themselves....it was only cool when Joan Rivers did it :)

Hey, I like it when Entourage does that!

The dumbass kid trying to circumcize himself was the funniest thing ever.  He finds a self-circumcision web page with narrated audio.  It's so ridiculous.  The voice and tone of the narrated web page is so hilarious.  Oh god.  I might have to watch that scene again.

the tenth episode of the first season, "adelle coffin," has one of the most heartbreaking sequences i've ever seen on television.

i agree with anyone who says it's all downhill post-first season, though.

At any rate, there's a lot to look forward to if you've only seen a bit of Season 1.  cheeseburgers (both pre-op and post op), Scientology, serial killers, beastiality infidelity, and morbid obesity are but a few of the issues addressed.

I hate Sean's wife.  She's such a bitch.  And their stupid ass son permanently has like a 35 year old's 5 o' clock shadow.  And he looks like Michael Jackson.

In Season 2 he starts to look more like a skinhead Carrot Top.......he has weird eyebrows.

This whore wife isn't shutting up.  What ever made Sean get attracted to her in the first place.  Please tell me she gets chopped up or something.

Ok can someone explain something. There's this pic that TBS and many other people used to post on GAF/EB a lot which garnered lots of inside laughs. Apparently it was this fat chick near a bed or something, about to have sex? Can someone explain this

I can see why Sean was attracted to her, but not why Christian was.

Sorry, you've got 3 more seasons of her nonsense to go....from the looks of things though, she'll be mostly out of the picture in Season 5.

Border, tell me if I am right:  Annoying Son Matt is actually Christian's son, not Sean's.  They just started laying it on thick in this ep.

I'm on the episode when Annoying Wife gets pregnant again, and Sean and Christian have a conversation about how Christian talked Sean out of talking to his wife about an abortion when she was preggers with Matt, and it was just so obvious.  Between that, and his behaviour in previous eps in regards to Matt totally gives it away.  How far off is the reveal?

A couple of seasons, actually!  They're laying the seeds for it now.  I guessed during the first season when someone mentioned to Sean that Matt doesn't really look like him and Sean says something like Matt takes after his grandfather or something.

what is incredible about the show is the really high production values and great cinematography. It also oozes of style and kelly clarkson. This along with house are the only things that prevent me from destroying my plasma screen.

I'm watching this right now :(  For as trashy and campy as the show usually is, they really nailed this.  The whole subplot, really.
