Quickly like that, I'd say it'd be the Xbox or the PS2 ports of The King of Fighters 2002/2003. Never understood the appeal of putting those ugly 1994 sprites over ridiculously plain 3D backgrounds. It's just crass, and it's just the dedicated fanbase who are going to buy them anyway. Better give them the original stuff.

Comix Zone looks like shit from a design perspective. Graphically it's okay for a Genesis/Mega Drive game, but....ugh....90s comic art....

Scenester and I were playing Golden Axe today and the cutscenes are pretty "I can't believe it's not PSone!"

I'd say the ports (hell, the original is worse) of KOF 2001 are a lot uglier than KOF 2002/2003. I LIKE what they did to 2003, too...the 3D backgrounds needed more detail, but had some nice animations and changes between rounds. Good stuff. I generall prefer their 2D backgrounds by a mile though, especially the ones in all the Atomiswave-based fighters. KOF Neowave's 3D backgrounds are the best of all the games, since they are incredibly close to the 2D versions.

These are from the more recent SNK fighters, and the backgrounds look a lot better IMO.

I think they were talking about the original Sega classics collection, which had several 3D "upgrades" to classic Sega franchises (like Golden Axe and Outrun), which looked pretty hideous.
