PHOENIX DARK MOVIE THEATER: Princess Mononoke

This amazing movie changed my perspective on cartoons as well as anime. I have never been into anime; to me, watching big eyed girly men think for 30 minutes straight before the action starts is not what I call entertainment. But after seeing Castle in the Sky, I began to realize that the medium was far bigger than I originally thought. Princess Mononoke further convinced me of this.


Meet Lady Eboshi: the most badass woman since Ridley; she'll cut your dick off!

My initial suprise in this movie came from the violence. I had never seen a "cartoon" with such violent content. Within 30 minutes of the movie, a man's fucking arm is shot off by an arrow, as well as another guy's head! This truly caught me off guard.


Another badass woman. Rosie O'Donnel would be proud.

After this initial shock, I began to become emersed in the story. Princess Mononoke is far more than a simple action cartoon. In many ways it is a brilliant metaphor of man and nature's violent clashes. Like Lord of the Rings, Princess Mononoke deals with the idea of man warring against nature, and the advancement of technology at the cost of our planet's resources.

In terms of story and action, this movie is flawless. Also, the movie introduces many interesting characters who help progress the movie. From Princess Mononoke herself to Ashitaka to the badass Lady Eboshi, each character really shines. And with the help of voice acting from Billy Bob Thorton and Will Smith's baby mama, what can go wrong? Classic classic classic.

Japanese self loathing has GOT to stop sometime.

This is one of his better movies and of course, the one with probably the biggest production values.

I liked it well enough but like most self loathing japanese stories it comes down to basic elements that feel like a hammer to the head in the JRPGs you hate so much.

I didn't find the movie to be self loathing based.  It deals with two sides in a war that have in their eyes a good reason to do what they do and do it at all costs.

The giant Totoro at the entrance to the Ghibli Museum was so awesome. My wife was amused by just how excited I was at it. The giant Cat Bus playground inside the museum was pretty fucking sweet, too.

Go watch them now. Totoro is life affirming. It will make you smile more than any other film made. And then you'll run out and buy Totoro stuff (I have a little one hanging from my rear view mirror in my car, a stuffed one on my nightstand, a little one on the fridge, and a wind-up tin Totoro toy in the den).

Princess Mononoke is okay. It's one of those movies that you would see on Sci Fi channel like 8 years ago at 3 AM, and be blown away after experiencing a lifetime of rather tame by comparison American animation. But when you watch it later on, you realize it's mediocre.

Totoro never would've got made if it weren't for Grave of the Fireflies. The financial backers were not interested in Totoro in the slightest, but Grave of the Fireflies was a sure-fire hit, as hundreds of thousands of school children would go see animation adaptation of a well-known book. They figured to reward Miyazaki and let him finally make his little troll movie (Totoro had been under development for a long long time, morphing over the years into it's final form), which ended up becoming a cultural phenomenon in Japan.
