Hey, San Francisco! I'm coming up
« on: March 07, 2007, 02:22:14 AM »
A friend and I are coming to SF from 3/10-3/14. We are staying at the Adante Hotel which is on Geary and Jones, not far from Hyde.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations of places to check out. We will be going out to the bars pretty much every night and my friend will be looking for a place to live near UCSF (any recommendations for that are also appreciated).

Also if any of you want to hang out I'm definitely down.

Thanks all.

Geary and Jones? Damn son, you are going to get cut up for sure. That's tenderloin territory. Tough break mate. Try to take it on the side so they don't puncture any major arteries or organs.

BTW, everyone in SF heads to North Beach when they want to party. You'll find pretty much everything you want in North Beach.

A lot of UCSF students I know live in the Sunset or Richmond areas of San Francisco. Can't really tell you more than that. Why not just live in the dorms for now and get an appartment when he's more settled?

aww shit I thought it was NW of tenderloin territory. Well, all the reviews (many dozens) never mentioned feeling unsafe or that it was a terrible part of town. We looked at The Britton on 7th street for a little while until we discovered that it was in the center of crime in SF.

Wish me luck!

Haha, okay maybe you won't get stabbed but watch out. It's the "bad" part of SF. That said, compared to other major cities SF is pretty tame. Just be ready because you are gonna see some wild shit in that part of town. If you know how to handle yourself around homeless people asking for a handout and shady characters you should be fine. In my experience it's only when you have an attitude that they get aggressive. Just keep to yourself and don't do anything stupid like talking back to some bum who asks you for a quarter.

thanks for some real advise, I'll be sure to either have a few bucks in my pocket or at least politely state that I have no cash.

I don't have too much experience (but I have some) with this sort of thing. Phoenix is a very clean city.

You are coming from Phoenix? You might want to pack a light coat or jacket for the evenings when it gets a bit cold. Also, BRING AN UMBRELLA. I keep telling people who visit the Bay Area this and they never listen then end up getting caught SOL in the rain. You might not need it, but at this time of the year it's not worth risking it.

People actually get mad for the homeless, one time this cop was telling a homeless guy to stop sleeping on the bench and a whole crowd got mad at him and shouted at him, this was in berkely but same people in both cities.

And if you're not in castro, you're likely in the ghetto.  Fun ghetto though.  I shit you not, there's a cannabis shop at every corner.

And Itch, isn't Richmond super-ghetto?

Last summer, a homeless man in DC threatened to break my legs and piss on my face after my idiot girlfriend decided to humor him a little.  I can take verbal abuse, but the guy decided to demonstrate how he was going to kick my kneecaps backwards and was within inches of making contact.  I was ready to jab his fucking throat with my house keys, but thankfully he backed off and went on about the pissing on my face thing.

A general rule of thumb is not to speak to people who are missing teeth.  That's a sure fire sign that they're fucking crazy and will throw down without notice.

Richmond in San Francisco is what I'm talking about not the Richmond in the East Bay. Two different places. Richmond in the East Bay, you would probably get jumped like every fucking day.

Berkely is full of hippies so what you described sounds about par for that place.

My dad was robbed by a 12 year old in Richmond before.  Then they tried to take his car but my dad took the old beat up sedan so after half a block it died on him so he had to take off on foot.

No you have to say "Free grape drink"

And my teacher was telling us today of how on hippy communes where the children never saw a gun, the boys would make them out of wood and fight with each other.

Oakland is fun though, go to the Mr. Pizza Man next to the Walgreens/Rite Aide on Broadway and 13th for the best pizza you'll ever have.  You could also go to The Cheeseboard in Albany (small city next to Berkely) but they're full of fucking hippies and open whenever the fuck they want and don't let you choose the toppings.

Quick question before leave.

Tempe has a public smoking ban which includes bars, it's kind of nice because if you want to smoke you just go to the patio (no problem because the weather's nice) anyway, I have gotten used to not having to put up with smoky bars for a while (despite my being an occasional smoker) and I was wondering if there is a similar ban in San Francisco or not. So, is there?

California law states you cannot smoke indoors.  And even if you ARE outside you have to be 10-20 feet away from any accessible entrance/exit.

Well...good luck!  ;)

I don't think I've been to those ones.  I go to the Jack london square area like 3 times a week and always go to that Pizza Man.  I know what you're talking about with the shittiness of the chain though because I went to one in Berkeley and was surprised at how crappy it was.  I assure you that the one on Broadway is fucking awesome though, it's like twice the size and much better tasting.

Now if you'll excuse me I have costco pizza to finish.

made it home, even after a 120 mile detour in the middle of nowhere california (about 50 miles west of blythe). Apparently and semi roled or something and killed a bunch of people and they had to shutdown I10 for the rest of the day.

Anwyay, I had an amazing time in SF and I hardly did anything. Mainly I hung out in Golden Gate Park or walked around the area of town I was staying in (Geary and Jones), btw, The Original Perfect Hamburger is the greatest litle diner I went to, great burgers and omlettes and apparently a good kung pow beef too. Had a blast at the bars or hanging out at Union Square taking in the sites and people watching.

I plan on making another trip to SF sometime in the near future.
