Cherry blossom season is almost upon us. Soon, the cherry blossom trees will be in bloom, like explosions of pink everywhere you look. Then, the wind will blow away the blossoms, like some sorta beautiful whirlwind! It's going to look so pretty. I think I'm going to do a picnic lunch at Ueno park and enjoy the cherry blossoms.

I wish some of you guys could come along. We'd drink a few beers and just contemplate the trees. It's really nice!

I always wanted to see this, hopefull I can book my trip to japan, around spring.

Ichirou, how close do they know when they are going to blossom? How long does the look last? Can they forecast about when they blossom?

They tend to bloom around the middle end of march, and it lasts about a week and a half. They used to bloom earlier, but the changing weather (global warming, maybe?) is changing the blooming season. It looks amazing, though, especially when you're on the train and you're looking out and all you can see is pink, pink, pink! You'll be amazed at how many thousands of cherry blossom trees are planted everywhere.

Yeah, there are celebrations called "Hanami" (flower viewings), basically people go out to the parks and have picnics while watching the trees.

They're everywhere in Japan, but they bloom at different times of the year depending on what part of Japan they are in.

Oh, most Japanese celebrations/parties seem to end up with all the participants in various degrees of public drunkenness. It's quite fun. I'd never gotten drunk before coming to Japan but since I've been here, it's been a different story...
