Buy a GCN SP?
« on: March 09, 2007, 09:44:35 PM »
Here is my reasoning:

I can sell the Gamecube off to kinda take off a bit (about $50 maybe, unless I can swindle), and the Wii is BC with Gamecube. So it will be like buying a Gamecube++; with added features. Like buying a DS Lite, even though I have a DS. Or buying a slim PSTwo, even though I have a PS2. I hate VC and wish to never support it, and frankly Wii games are shit. At this rate my library will consist of first party titles. As of date, there is only one game I want -- Paper Mario. Zelda, too. But I'd rather play that on the Gamecube -- which is BC on the Wii. Unfortunately Jewtendo decided not to opt to give me a choice to play Paper Mario on the Gamecube, so to be short I am forced to buy a Wii for this game alone... and I guess the other games coming out.

My other option is to just save up and buy a new TV for my 360.

Before I thought of Wii as this whole new console, but after looking at it from this angle - buying essentially a Gamecube Lite (tm), I really don't feel as bad. It is like re-purchasing a Gamecube, but with the tacked on features of a Wii.

Haha.

The only good thing about the Wii hardware being so close to the gamecubes is the backwards compatibility. Soon the ps3 wont offer it, and what X360 offers  is just emulation, which is still buggy as hell for supported titles.

Ill never see RSC2 again cause I wont buy another Xdude :(

It could be more responsive and less cheap. Nintendo can take the huge profits from DS and Wii and make a version of the Wii that isnt so cheap.

Man I want to play Baten Kaitos Origins too.

So is the Picture Quality take a hit like Jotaro says or is he just spreading FUD on my possible purchase?

Nintendo doesn't "SP" their consoles and they can't do anything to make the games incompatiable with the current Wii's. Ain't going to happen till "Wii 2" in 4 years or so.

It looks the same as Gamecube in 480p, not that I think you were playing Gamecube in 480p in the first place.

The console and controller feel well built like every other Nintendo console, and the remote is responsive.

I WILL be playing in 480p soon enough, and thus this raises a cause for concern.

I'd take a new TV over a Game Cube Turbo.  In fact right at the end of last year, I got a new HDTV to go along with the PS3 and Wii.  The TV (and PS3) get plenty of use, but the Wii just sits there, waiting for something new and decent to play.  It hasn't even been plugged in for like two months now.  If these systems were easy to find in Japan, there's no way I would have reserved one for launch.  It just doesn't have shit.

Unfortunately Jewtendo decided not to opt to give me a choice to play Paper Mario on the Gamecube, so to be short I am forced to buy a Wii for this game alone... and I guess the other games coming out.

Don't do this here.

I don't see how $250 is really going to break your HDTV budget...

I regretted getting a Wii when I saw it in stores out of sheer luck in early Jan and have been bored with it since I got it. Super Paper Mario videos from GDC reassure me though. My 250 will be earned in April I hope.

And no Zelda doesn't count!

I'm beginning to have my doubts on the Wii myself. I got one at launch but it hasn't served me any use since I beat Zelda. Usually you'd shrug it off because all new consoles are like that, but with Wii it's different because there's controls to deal with.

Nintendo's whole goal behind the Wii is for simpler controls and yet, almost all of the games I've played on the Wii except Zelda (haven't played Trauma Center yet) have overly convoluted controls that would have been so much simpler with a normal game pad. People complained about Sonic's controls and how you have to get used to them. I made a thread about SSX Blur and how I played an hour and a half and STILL can't get them down. This would be fine if this only occurred in the shitty launch games (Red Steel), but this is happening with games almost 6 months after launch, which is uncalled for. "Developers are getting used to the new controller" my foot. If Nintendo thinks traditional game controllers are so complex why are the controls in these Wii games so damn ridiculous to control? Either release the games with good controls or don't, period.

Nintendo's Wii better have some games come out fast that use the controller well or I may end up selling mine because that's the whole point of owning a Wii. Other wise it's just an over priced last gen console. I'll see, but they really have work to do.

I'm like you demi, I kind of want to get a wii, but the only games I want for it right now are Zelda and Paper Mario.

The other consoles are too expensive for me at this point in time.

Maybe for a limited time; one game is not going to make it worth the purchase.  Once you finish Paper Mario in the week or two that it will take to beat, your Wii (I almost wrote Game Cube by accident...scary) is going to be gathering dust again.

The Wii seems to be following the Nintendo trend of having barely anything worth playing save for the occasional Nintendo and a few third party titles every 5-6 months.  I hope this is just a post-launch drought and nothing more, but this system is really failing to gel with me.  Games like Wii Sports and Hajimete No Wii (Wii Play in English, right?)  offered some multiplayer fun for a hour or two, but got old after that.  Wario was fun but ended too quickly.  I actually haven't even gotten around to Zelda yet...just don't care about it.  I think I'd rather play the GC version.
