Possible new 360 buyer here: help?
« on: March 14, 2007, 04:40:48 PM »
Guys I have a dilemna. I really want a 360 and I should have one in time for April or May (before Mass Effect :)) but I hear they're going to do a price drop for the pro 360 soon. I was thinking of getting 360 core and then upgrading it with an hdd. What do you guys think?

Are gamestop refurbished 360's good? Also, are core 360's with hdd's capable of doing the same functions as pro 360's? Finally, is it true that a price drop will appear soon?

I'm this close to selling my Wii, Zelda, and my controllers for a 360. This close. But I won't because I know I'll eventually have to rebuy one (Mario Galaxy), but at the same time, this thing won't be any use to me in the near future with the exception of Super Paper Mario.

I've got 140 dollars on me riiiiiiiiight now. If I took my Wii, Zelda, and controllers to gamestop I am pretty positive I would be able to come out with a 360 and at least one game.

Ugh the temptation. But then I wouldn't have shit to save my games on. Fuck core 360 for not coming with an hdd.

omg Mass Effect :hyper

Well, there's Crackdown, Oblivion, Dead Rising, Dead or Alive 4, and lots of other games out now that interest me enough to get a 360.

Fuck that dude. Apparently 360 core only comes with a wired controller.  ::) No way to save, wired controller. Fuck that. I'm going pro.

One more month of saving and I shall go NEXT GEN.

go with a wired controller d00d, you have to use AA batteries with the wireless ones or worse, to buy Microsoft's ridiculous "play and charge" kit

it adds a lot of useless weight to the gamepad too

and has your TV got component inputs? if not then a core could serve you well

How much does the play and charge kit cost?

Also, what adds to the weight of the controller? The batteries?

My tv is 4 years old, and the only wires it can accept are yellow and white.

Don't listen to Mondain, he's crazy.  I use the wireless controller all the time and it feels just fine.

the wired gamepad feels slightly better but I didn't claim that the wireless one wasn't good either or that the difference was anything else than minor

Microsoft wants 20 bucks for the play and charge kit

http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=802125

if your TV is that old then the default composite cables bundled with the Core 360 is all that you can use anyway

Play and charge is about $15.

It makes a hump on the bottom of the controller which is maybe a few ounces.

You have an SD TV.

I would suggest getting a premium that comes with two wireless controllers (one play & charge kit which means you have to buy AA batteries for the other controller) and if you want more controllers, to get wired ones.

There's a lot of good games but if you don't get the 360 before Mass Effect I would still suggest getting the collecter's edition.

Wireless controller plus rechargable batteries :bow

I have a wired controller because you can use it for emulators on the pc (works great).

Definetly get the 360, avoid the core pack unless you are very poor. Get xbox live and a few microsoft points so you can buy geometry wars/alien hominid hd/worms/tmnt/etc, these XBLA games are really a good chunk of time spent on the x360 when retail games are far apart.

Mass effect :bow

Anyway Gears of War is ace both online and off, must have game unless you despise shooters for some reason. Rainbow Six is also another good shooter. Oblivion is a very cool rpg if you have tons of time on your hands. Crackdown I hear is a good GTA style game (I havent got around to it yet). lost planet is very fun mecha/third person shooter, it has some really good graphics and amazing boss fights.

But anyway an Xbox 360 without live just isnt the same experience, trust me. online gaming is where its at :bow\

Beautiful is HD. HD is beautiful.

Mondain is out of his fucking mind :lol

Don't get the play and charge kit, get the quick charge one. It's more better, it charges quicker and I've heard that batteries charged with the play and charge kit don't always give the right reading as far as how juice left.

And don't buy the fucking Core. I wouldn't sell the Wii either but that's just me - I don't like to sell shit, ever

play and charge is all right, it takes half an hour and you can play ten feet from the TV.

The only notification the controller gives is blinking when it has an hour left right?

definitely sell your Wii while its value is probably higher than a brand new retail one, normal shipments of Wii are resuming in April and the frenzy will be over

and buy it again in 2-3 years when it's cheaper and it's got a bunch of great Nintendo games to make it worthwhile

Himu the 360 isn't as good as everyone makes it out to be.  By far the best next gen console but thats not saying much.  Don't sell your wii.  Also has mass effect been dated?  or is it still around just thought to be around June.

I'm not selling my Wii, but it probably won't get any use until I get Super Paper Mario sometime. After that, it probably won't be turned on utnil Super Mario Galaxy. I might as well unplug it now.

Anyways, 360 isn't as good as people say? Blech. The games look interesting to me:

Viva Pinata, Graw, R6: LV, DOA4 (xbl ftw), Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Crackdown, Saints Row;etc. that's enough to last me until Mass Effect and then some.

VP is a pretty fun game but it's a bit disheartening when you first play it, since it seems every 5 seconds they are feeding you with an onslaught of information about the gameplay mechanics. The great thing about 360 is being able to d/l demos for the games you mentioned. I enjoyed the Lost Planet demo a lot for instance, but was kinda bored with Crackdown and Saint's Row (I hate the free-roaming sandbox genre so YMMV).

Gonna d/l TMNT tonite, 4 player coop over XBL FTW! It'll be like I was 8 years old and at the arcade with $20 worth of tokens all over again!

Saints Row was actually pretty good.

And I didn't like the TMNT demo, TiT was better.  TiT was much better.

Ew Himu, don't get a 360 and use it on an SDTV. Come on naw :-\ . Get a 50" refurbished HDTV for like $1000. SAVE UP BITCH. A lot of the visual fidelity is going to be lost to SD

My room does not have space for 50 inch tv's.

I'm thinking of going to a Best Buy, getting 600-700 dollar hdtv with 720p input, putting down half and then paying the rest off. I honestly can't imagine having a 360 without an hdtv.

True that, I got a 27" Samsung DynaFlat CRT HDTV about a year and a half back. Cost me $700 at the time. I mainly use my 360 on my Big Screen RCA but yeah, you should be able to get a 30" HDTV much cheaper now.

Don't let the haters make you think otherwise. Some 360 games look good in SD, but nearly all have a visual punch in HD.

My main reason isn't so much as the visual punch, but because some games (Dead Rising and Blue Dragon) are virtually unreadable on a standard tv.

I'm going to have to get an hdtv soon anyways, so I might as well get one for my eventual 360, as much as I distaste that idea.

btw one thing I notice going into these electronic stores is that the quality of these monitors on display is usually SHIT. it's blurry and crap and it's never ever impressed me. Why is it such low quality? Because a normal tv displays the stuff they present at these stores better.

uh, because they show SDTV cable that is broadcasted on a splitted wire among all the HDTVs in the store

and because these TVs aren't calibrated

wait until some 32 inches LCD HDTV is on sale for a few hundred bucks and you'll be fine, most LCDs share the same glass panel manufacturers and cheap sets have surprisingly nice picture quality for the price
