What's the word on Chris Rock's I THINK I LOVE MY WIFE?
« on: March 16, 2007, 03:51:15 PM »
Looks funny, but it has this whole under-the-radar thing going on.  Opens this week, but I expect 300 to still be No. 1 at the box-office.

It's supposed to be a serious comedy. Not the over the top stuff he usually does.

Mixed reviews so far. But his Howard Stern appearance was classic. Download it.

Had to watch it earlier this week. Its serious and hilarious stuff. Its written very well and the comedy is consistant through out the movie from start to finish.

Uh last year was one of the best years for comedy movies.

Clerks II was fantastic and Kevin Smith's first critically really well liked film since Chasing Amy and Borat was one of the biggest comedy successes in a long time(and most of the haters on evilbore admitted they were wrong after the dvd came out) and next month...HOT FUZZ!

so wtf are you talking about?

Well I haven't seen those, but, I was generally talking about the over hyped drivel like Wedding Crasher's and Napoleon Dynamite type of crap.

These days most comedies usually don't sit well with me.

We need more R rated action comedies like 48 hours, beverly hills cop, and all that good shit in the 80's that rocked. Honestly I miss that genre the most.

Movie looks absolutely horrible, as most movies Rock is involved with are. I'm surprised anyone here is interested in this shitfest that looks almost as dumb as Norbit

John Landis is the KING of 80's R rated comedies. He directed these R rated comedies back then:

Animal House
The Blues Brothers
Trading Places
Spies Like Us
Coming To America

He has gone very downhill over the years but at his height with films like those he probably was one of the greatest comedy directs in film history IMO.

It's not opinion cheebs. It's FACT and the very reason comedy is so hit or miss with me. They're hard to top.

Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights) and Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) have shown great promise at bringing back the crude funny, although McKay's movies have been rated PG-13 in theaters.

They are really trying to be this generations John Landis and Harold Ramis(National Lampoon's Vacation, Caddyshack....etc) but can those two from the 80's be topped?

Especially Landis. I really honestly don't think so. Not at least right now.

Yeah, I would want to see more out of those guys before I made that call.  Although I will say that Anchorman is funnier than anything Landis did except Coming to America.  However, both movies are funny due to the actors more than the directors IMO.

I loved Anchorman but haven't seen Talladega Nights yet. How is it?

40 Year Old Virgin was okay, but turned into a damn soap opera.

Talladega Nights isn't as good, but it's still pretty funny in a lot of parts, especially anything involving Jean Girard, Sasha Baron Cohen's character.

Did you see 40 YOV in the theater or on dvd?  Because for the dvd they edited back in a bunch of scenes that were cut from the theatrical release, and I really thought it made the movie feel bloated.

Hell yeah.

Teen comedies (and movies in general) aren't as good as they used to be either imo.

Generally for teen comedies I agree but there is the occasional movie like Mean Girls which I think is one of the very best alongside stuff like 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Dazed & Confused..etc

Also movies themselves I think are very good right now. Better than the 90's. If I ranked the 60's-00's I would put the 90's in dead last.

The Breakfast Club was horrible and not very funny. Bueller's Day Off is good, but it's not a riot or anything.
