Why dont you give me a list of your startup programs that start when windows does. Have you still been stupid and not bought more ram? Tard we told you what you needed and its your own fucking fault if you havent gotten anything.

When I start my computer it takes extra time as AOL messenger pops up (which I never use), as well as something related to Abobe

I'll get the RAM soon, but I'm just curious

Go into preferences on AIM and cancel start on windows startup. You can do that for adobe as well in its preferences or options. Theres probably a shit ton of stuff running in the background that would require you to delete and change the registry for your windows startup. Honestly save what you have on your computer to another hdd or something then reinstall your OS then make those changes. It will make your computer faster especially if you havent done a fresh install in more than a year.

And pick up ram, before it goes back up in price. Were kind of at a low point in the season for tech. So the prices have gone down. Just wait till may and the price will jump so get it now dude.

Phoenix, do you know how to use msconfig?

Start>Run>type
msconfig

Go to the Startup tab, and this will list all the processes that start when your computer starts.

If you can get me a screenshot of the msconfig startup tab showing every program listed (this might take 2 or 3 screenshots), I'll be able to tell you what you can safely remove from your startup list to free up some RAM.

Got rid of that stuff, and now it starts much faster.

Would deleting programs free up RAM?

Only if they are running in the background. Remember when you use a browser it will use ram just as with any program but if your  not using those programs and they are closed they dont use ram. But we told you to get more ram. Your just terribly stuborn like me and the dentist.

RAM is cheap, get more RAM. Also, use alternatives to commercial programs whenever possible. You'll almost always come out better in terms of resource usage, and freeware (open source apps especially), don't ninja their way into your startup (ie. realsched, qttask, ituneshelper). Programs like Rambooster can help, but they're of less use in XP than they were in 98/ME from my experience. You can do other stuff like using a solid color for your wallpaper and switching back to the classic interface (IIRC) to gain a few more MB, but they won't be nearly as affective as cleaning your starting processes up and shying away from commercialware.

Also, get more RAM.

Firefox has a pretty bad memory leak, by the way. Having multiple windows of that open would be draining a lot of RAM - especially if you leave them open for a few hours.

PD, I just went through the whole list for you. Here's what you should be able to safely remove:

PDVDServ (Only keep this checked if you use a remote control for PowerDVD).
readericon45G (it's related to your media card reader. If it doesn't work right with this disabled, re-enable it)
nwiz (checks for Nvidia driver updates. You can do this yourself)
NvMcTray (related to your graphics card. You shouldn't notice problems with it gone, but re-enable if you do)
HDAShCut
RECGUARD (Don't bwe a dumbass and you'll be fine. Don't delete your recovery partition!)
Remind_XP
ALCMTR
BJMyPrt (related to Canon printing. Remove it, and if you notice problems, reenable it)
IPHSend
qttask
ITunesHelper
realsched
(the blank one)
msmsgs
AdobeUpdateMana...
bittorrent
Adobe Reader Spe...
BigFix

---

Basically, it's anything that isn't Google related or McAfee related.

Also PD, when does your McAfee subscription run out?

You might want to consider moving to something like AVG Free when it comes time to pay for McAfee again. It's very lightweight on system resources (about 15MB or so when I ran it on my PC).

I really suggest unchecking everything I listed. When you uncheck it, restart. If shit isn't working properly anymore, that's when you should re-enable it. I have a feeling you'll be ok with removing everything I listed though.

It expired awhile ago, but that doesn't stop it from popping up telling me that lol. I'll be playing WoW and the game will start lagging, and then in the bottom right corner I'll get the popup. I seriously need to get rid of it because I haven't used it in awhile. I have lots of Spyware protecters

AVG is good but if you have a good internet provider you can get a free copy of Norton or McFee.

Why even keep it on your PC if it's expired? You aren't protected from anything new at this point anyhow.

Remove McAfee.
Install AVG Free.

Spyware scanners (generally speaking) don't look for viruses and stuff. You really need some kind of up to date virus protection on your PC.

I'd stay as far away from the both of them as I could.

Norton is a complete system hog and it fucks up your registry. Uninstalling is a total bitch, and even though Symantec says they've made it easier to uninstall their product, I've still seen PCs get completely fucked trying to uninstall the latest version.

AVG will use far fewer system resources than either McAfee or Norton.

I'm pretty down with Avast.

Any reason I shouldn't be, Ecro?

I'm using Avast now. I was using AVG before I switched.

Note that I switched because AVG missed a virus. GAF was saying Avast had slightly better detection, so I switched. Since I never really get viruses, I can't really confirm if it's got better protection or not.

What I can tell you is that avast has a noticeable impact on my system performance. It seems like it does a more processor-intensive scan of files and stuff when I go to use them, which manifests itself into things being a bit slower than they were with AVG.

The place I notice this the most is with my email. AVG would let me download my mail extremely quickly while still being able to scan them for viruses, and it takes a lot longer to get my mail since I've switched to avast.

I'm not terribly happy with the switch, and I'm constantly debating switching back to AVG.

Oh, and Avast's components take up like 45MB of RAM according to my Task Manager.

It's basically a microsoft thing for dumping your memory to a file if you encounter an error.
I'd uncheck it in a heartbeat.
