It's pretty great.  Aside from some questionable editing choices that kind of perplex me given that Nolan is a veteran director (all of which are in the first half of the movie, as the film jumps from timeline to timeline), it was a pretty great piece of work.  Looks great, acting was fantastic and the ending was magnificent. How Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman's characters evolve and change over the course of the film is terrific.

It really was like a great magic trick.

Bale is just fucking great all around.  It makes me so happy that Nolan is staying with Batman, too.  He's sooo good.

Christian Bale is fantastic in this.  He gives a very layered and surprising performance too.  I think he benefits from a good script that forces you into a perception of him as a character based on events rather than him as a person.

Seriously though–if you really think about it, he had to play such a complex character then in reality was like two seperate characters altogether.  Such a great performance.  Jackman wasn't shappy either, but he's always pretty good.  He was the best thing about the first two X-men movies and made the third one slightly okay when he was on screen.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jackman in a future Bats flick, but it'll never happen.

How did it get a bit too whacky Jappy?  Although, I did see the twist with Bale's character coming a mile away.

Jackman could be Robin in the next Batman movie, according to my sources. While he'll be considerably older than the ideal side kick, his open homosexuality will render him as helpless (at times) as a side kick.

Also, I think The Prestige and The Departed try to bring home some similar ideas, and find it funny that both focus on two intertwining storylines that take place in kind of an underbelly of mainstream society.  Also, The Prestige was more enjoyable and not a knockoff of some Hong Kong production.

Low blow! That's like saying negative things about someone after their death - they can't defend themself!

The Departed was amazing.

The Departed is undone by a silly strain of events following one of the main character's demise.  If the entire elevator sequence was shot using South Park characters and animation, verbatim, it'd be hysterical.  As is, it just seems awkward and slightly humorous, but mostly surreal.  And not in a good way.  In the kind of way like, "What the fuck, why did they just ruin a perfectly good movie?"

I don't hate it.  I never said I did.  I said it's not amazing.  It's a good flick, but that's about it and it's pretty damn flawed.  I'd almost say it's forgettable, but Jack Nicholson did his best to keep things afloat.

Oh, did you mean The Prestige, Mupepe?  Yeah, Prestige haters are just haters!

Leo is amazing in it too.

The elevator scene was awesome. Totally unexpected and random. And the look on...the departed's face before he died...wow

Leo really blew me away in the movie. He goes from a rather cocky, breezy guy to a complete nervous wreck; stunning. I love the scene with him at the psychiatrist.

When something is unexpected in a movie, it's not automatically awesome.  I understand it ties into the title particularly well, but shit.  It's just a fucking train-wreck as soon as the elevator scene happens.

It's completely laughable and unnecessary.  The point blank head shots, one after another after another after another is ridiculous.  The film felt gritty and suspenseful up until that sequence and then it becomes pointless afterwards.

Not to mention that the fact that Leo was an idiot for NOT keeping his guard up, when throughout the whole effin' movie he was basically defined for having good defenses.

The elevator scene is pretty distinguished mentally-challenged, but i wouldn't call it a trainwreck.  It just completely changes the pace of the movie and is kind of backwards IMO.  It's just... so out of place.  I still love the movie as a whole.  But I can't say I'm lovin the elevator scene.

The movie does rock all sorts of balls, tits and ass though.

He thought he won - that was beyond obvious. The smirk on his face, the little "I am killing you" quirp, etc. He was ready to victoriously march his capture out when he ran into unexpected occurances.

I thought the entire thing was definitely shocking - I'll give you that. But it was done very well

Loved The Prestige.  And even though Nolan's best film is still Memento, he's growing ever more adapt at being a fine technical director.  I'm always going to look forward to a new film from him.

And I echo Wilco's sentiments on The Departed (I'm not sucking up).  Its a pretty good movie, but most of what's good in it isn't new and what's new isn't so good.  I did love the supporting bits, and Matt Damon was great.  DiCaprio gave a good performance but was stuck playing a hopelessly muddled part.  Maybe if Jack Nicholson wasn't hogging up so much damn time the whole thing would have ran smoother.

Meh, I'm tired about arguing about The Departed.  This thread should be about how much ass The Prestige kicked.  How's about that musical score?  Just about perfect, wadn't it?

It was the first time I saw Hugh Jackman in a movie and realized he can be a fucking great, really moving actor with the right script and director.

WHAT THE FUCK THEY JUST FUCKING KILLED THE GOOD GUY!!

I also just saw the prestige 2 days ago and thought it was awesome.

We kept talking about "hey now wait, if he was the guy that stayed there, then he always died going in, but if he said "you dont know what it's like, thinking about if you'll be the one in the tank or the one up there"...then you think well, either the split is random, or the original guy stays there on the platform, so either way the original guy is dead.

but if the guy teleports then the original is also dead because he shot him...

my personally opinion on the matter though is that there is no original.  once they are copied, the copies are SO exact that there technically is no original.  so the original was completely destroyed once he did the first copy, which was before he shot the other one.  that's also why he never knew if he went in the tank or not, because if it's the same conscious person, he wouldn't know which mind goes where.... since he's exactly the same.
