I want a laptoppy thing
« on: March 21, 2007, 09:34:25 PM »
Electricity is so expensive in Southern California that I think I would like to switch from my ginormously honkin' desktop to a laptoppy thing. This would not only use less power in general, I could more easily shut it down/place it in sleep mode when I'm not in the house or when I'm sleeping. I would also like it to be relatively portable, so none of that "portable desktop" with 30 minutes of battery when not at an AC outlet bullshit. I would like for it to be able to run WoW reasonably well, but am not really too worried about other forthcoming games.

1) I kind of want an Intel-based Mac, but I have no idea what kind I should get.
2) Is that stupid? Should I get some sort of PC instead?

Thank you for your advices!

Not a bad idea.  And when ASUS prices their external video card, you can have a decent workstation at home!  The Intel Core Duo seem to be the best power to performance solution, because I've heard the Core 2 Duo's eat up a lot more power.

If you're going laptop, I'd honestly wait.  Next generation stuff is almost here; integrated graphics options are going to take a giant leap as the first post-Vista and DX10 compatible laptops arrive.  Not saying that you won't be better off with a dedicated video card (you always will be), but the mainstream solutions are going to get a huge performance boost with software and hardware more tailor made for Vista, DX10 and dual core processors.

Yeah the new centrino plus's will be coming out around the same time as the new intel integrated DX10 graphics chips. I'm gonna wait it out and get one of those when they come out in may. The big thing will be if, i mean when AMD/ATI do a combo laptop gpu/cpu combo chip. Its gonna happen but when is a big question.

Asus might look nice but i've been hearing horrible problems with customer service being handed off with the laptops.
