Shmups
« on: March 22, 2007, 03:41:58 PM »
One of the best game genres ever. I don't care what anyone says. It's an awesome genre. I'm not too good at these games but I still love them.

Some pretty cool shmups:

Arrow Flash (genesis)

It's a pretty decent shmup. I like it for nostalgia reasons. It's not better than the Genesis' other stand out shmups like Thunderforce V or Gaires, but it's still worth checking out.

I'm pissed North America never got Super Fantasy Zone. I may have to import it or pirate it one day.

Thunderforce IV (genesis)

The supreme Genesis shmup (from what I've played of the genre on the console). This game is absolutely ridiculous and must be played by all fans of the genre!

Raycrisis (psx)

Raystorm (psx)

Bangai-O (dc)

Ikaruga (dc)

Gradius V (ps2)

yup, for reals.  All have been ESRB rated, have publishers, the whole nine.
Of course we've been hearing about how some of those are just around the corner for many months now, but I do believe its for real this time, and that they will be hitting stores within a reasonable proximity to today's date.

Man, I can't wait to play The Red Star, I've had a boner for that game for about four years now.

It is, but that's the arcade/Japanese name for the series.

Oh, and I forgot to rave about the game I named myself for.
                                HyperZone
which was pretty awesome.

Terrific music, great graphics, I love this game.  Anybody who don't should go back to playing EA crap or sumtin'.

shame there aren't better photos of it online to show off.  Of well, when it hits the VC the world will be gripped with a HyperZone rennasiance, and I will be proven a wise man, well ahead of my time, instead of the mad fool I am currently labeled as.

Anyone ever played this old one on the NES called Stinger? A childhood treasure of mine. It was the time when we actually _had_ the patience to play through games over and over again in order to master and complete them because we didn't have a multitude of entertainment options spoiling us.  :'(

Mondain, Stinger is actually the NES version of Twinbee.

I love me some Viewpoint and Pulstar.  Also Raiden!
