How do I expand my music?
« on: March 22, 2007, 09:01:25 PM »
Soooo. I listen to a lot of music. But some people have like 50,000+ songs. The fuck. I only have 400+. I like them all though.

So where do I discover new music? I have no fucking clue where to start. Pretty much all of my music is from famous stuff. It's just very varied.

I like all kinds of music, but I'm very picky at the same time.

torrent, muddy waters essential collection, howlin' wolf's essential collection and BB kings live at the regal.  If you don't like any of that move on.

Don't blindly download. Search their stuff on YouTube first, and see what you like. Then download

Go to sites like myspace or purevolume

Just go to google and type "purevolume band name" or "myspace band name"

More than likely they will have a page with a couple songs to listen to.

You can also sample CDs off of Amazon and see if its worth it. Thats pretty much a prerequisite for me before I touch a whole CD.

He has so many good songs.

These are what I have:

Billy Jean
Earth Song
Thriller
Smooth Criminal

I used to take good cds I had and read the liner notes. A lot of times, bands will thank other bands they like/have toured with/etc. That's where I found a lot of my favorite bands, from the liner notes of other bands. :D

Jazz is great (though "Jazz" is a very broad term). The Jazz I like (Soul, Cool, Smooth, Nu etc) is very much a slow burn and requires you to meet it at some middle ground where you sit back and let it take you over.

Also about expanding your taste, definitely listen to some Internet Radio (Shoutcast is what I use). Let it play in the background as you do whatever on the computer and when something piques your interest, look it up. That artist may lead to some nuanced genre or similar artists, so on and so forth.

This is the station I've been listening to like 90% of the time I'm on my PC

My music collection is very small. Maybe because I don't like rock and rap.
The only rock act I like is Linkin Park. And the only rap act I like is Linkin Park also. :smug
My collection consists mosly out of electro(pop) and rnb. I'm a huge Daft Punk, Robyn, Justice and MIA fan. La Roux' album is also amazing.
You can also hear Lady Gaga or Christina Aguilera blasting off my speakers.  8)

If you're in North America, or maybe only the USA itself, you should try Pandora.com, one of the coolest sites to come out of "web 2.0" a couple years ago. Unlike Last.fm, they aren't run by a label and so don't have a label's agenda at their core.

Plugging in a couple artists or songs, and then making a few thumbs-up or thumbs-down recommendations based on their choices, you'll soon be hearing music you've never heard of before, and wondering why. There are links to purchase on Amazon and iTunes.

I've not been able to log in there since the various labels made Pandora shut off access to foreign-to-America IP addresses in 2007, but I've just been able to log in and am finally able to access my old favorites! Woot! Still no music access though. It's hard to believe the labels can be so utterly stupid and shortsighted as to go out of their way to block an agency which helps people find their music, and provide an easy and legal means of purchase. Just mind blowing.
