Drinky Crow Gaming Grab Bag March 24
« on: March 24, 2007, 12:26:40 PM »
Puzzle Quest...did you buy it? If you didn't, you are human filth. You are the bright yellow stains on the linoleum in public urinals. You are the crust CoolGuyChris washes off his dick after taking his rent "payment" from Willco. The PSP version is bestest -- the companion "bug" isn't anything close to gamebreaking since it only affects a once-off bonus per battle -- and OMG it is addictive. I apparently am very bad at it, but I don't mind; still I play on. I give this 9 demis in jean shorts polishing chrome at a local truckstop out of 10.

Shining Force EXA...holy fuck this is a good looking PS2 game. The voices definitely are NOT as game-slaughteringly irritating as they were in NEO, and you can also turn them off regardless. The game plays like SF NEO (and the Dreamcast Lodoss War title before it) -- think a more story-dense linear take on Diablo, although so far I haven't run into a dungeon as gargantuan and brutal as those in NEO and Lodoss War. I'm glad I didn't listen to the distinguished mentally-challenged fellows that review games these days and picked it up. I give it 8 dewy-eyed Himuros writing Haruhi Suzumiya fanfic out of 10.

God of War II...buy it. Wii owners can use it to predict what their machine might be capable of in six years, and everyone else who has experienced next-gen can gain a fleeting appreciation of what last-gen was capable of. Also it will make you rip your cock out of your girlpants and ram it into a light socket. This game makes me want to punch my own mother in the mouth and impregnate my dad, it's just so bad fuckin' ass. I give it 9 Mupepes planting romance blossoms on your sister's tits out of 10.

1701 AD...is a great, ultra-polished city builder meets Age of Empires 3 offering for the PC. It's horribly simple, but also unexpectedly deep and really, really pretty. The city upgrades create almost postcard-perfect little cartoon towns. Awwwww! I give it 8 Fragamemnons stroking their beards while silently contemplating Supreme Commander build orders out of 10.

Titan Quest: Immortal Throne...makes a mediocre Diablo clone awesome. Everyone is playing, but you are not because you are a fat worthless lump of liberal arts catshit. I'm gonna go back to playing it now and fuck you all in your infected urethras. I give it 10 Junpei Heats kekekekekekeke'ing through the 507th Baal run of the evening out of 10.

I also bought Oblivion for the PS3. (I bought it because watching a Gametrailers video of it made me pine to play it on the 60", so don't kill me Frag. MAF and TVC got their digs in already!) WTF! It's graphically INFERIOR to the 360 version, LOD textures aside -- the shadows are crude, the object draw-in distance is possibly even shorter, there's no anti-aliasing, and the shaders are much jankier (less clean gradients, harsher edges et al). The Shivering Isles expansion for the 360 adds the improved load times and LOD textures, so WOT THE HELL Bethesda. I'm taking it back and repurchasing the 360 version. Quadruple-dipping for the loss!

Earth Defense Force 360 = Cool, but pretty obvious why it's only 40 dollars.

Titan Quest Immortal Throne = What LoD was to Diablo II. Well worth the money.

Puzzle Quest = awesome but BOY DO THE MONSTERS GET SUM LUCKY DROPS FROM THE TOP!

Virtua Fighter 5 = The reason I bought the PS3, and until the 360 version comes out, the best reason period.

Valkyrie Profile 2 = Started to play through it again on PS3 in widescreen omg. Doesnt this 480p? Aside from the shimmering its gorgeous. Also seems so incredibly easy the second time through lol.

God of War II = making me consider rebuying God of War I, which I didnt like that much but GOW2 is so good! there's gotta be something to like in GoW I!

Question on TQ:IT...like LoD, do its improvements affect the original campaign, too? (adding new items and gameplay elements throughout?) Or are the improvements purely in the expansion campaign?

The original game is $20, the expansion is $30...if the former, I'll buy both at once; if the latter, I'll drop just the $20 on the original and see how I like it, first.

What are the improvements, anyhow?

Is this one of those "What did you buy this month?" threads?

Blu Ray:
Babel (free through that Gameznflix snafu!)
Casino Royale
Chicago
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (JP)
X-men: The Last Stand

PS3:
Oblivion
Armored Core 4
Gundam Musou (JP)
Genji: Days of the Blade -- Eh, it was $10. Can't hurt.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire -- The Gundam completist in me demanded the purchase of this game. Plus, I only paid $10 for it. Holy fucking jeebus is this game terrible!!

PS2:
God of War II
Yoshinoya (JP)
Appleseed EX (JP)
Kenka Banchou (JP)

DS:
Legend of Starfi 4 (JP)

So I bought all these games, and I'm still working through Resistance... someone kill me.

Synth: Yes, the expansion pack apparently adds new monsters, increases GOOD loot chance, decreases general mob hps so the game is less of a total grind, and some new stuff like Relic formulas that you use to create powerful relics you equip. For example one relic may require a compelted zeus charm, or a boar hide charm, or something like that and you use the new enchanter shopkeeper guy to use these items and the formula to create the relic. So you can actually sorta craft in the game...in a way.

They also added the really cool Dream class which I combined with Defense to make a Templar. I would like to add that Melee is WAYYYYYYYYY more viable now.

The expansion honestly fixes the games mechanics, but dont expect to see a lot of new quests or a completely re-worked story for the first portion of the game. Diablo II didnt even do that, but the itemization changes and fixes am awesome total.

This is a good thread.  :spin

Titan Quest: Immortal Throne - I never played the original game-seemed a bit drab when I played the demo for it
when it came out and I was busy playing WoW like six hours a day anyway. I went out and got the original + expansion last week for $35 (yay sales) and I'm just digging it completely. The thing I really like most is how well the expansion's features are tuned directly to improving core features most important to metagaming, which is all rogue-like games really are-one big loot and levels game with a lot of clicking in between.

Things like the caravan's transfer item feature makes twinking of other characters stupidly easy compared to Diablo 2-just throw the item in and grab it on another character. Similarly, the ability to unsocket out a valuable relic (think rune/gem from D2) to use it in an upgrade is awesome, as is the ability to remove a socketed item from an item without destroying it. These things fix the problem of "man I don't want to use this because something else just as good might be around the corner", now you just toss it in and go, and if you really need it later you can recover it.

My harbinger (dream+warfare) is fuck awesome. Dream mastery has this really cool ability called Phantom Stike where you blink out of the world, move to the target you want to hit, and then reappear and deal some BRUTAL area damage. It's on a decent cooldown (but Titan quest has items to reduce ability cooldowns at higher levels), but's it damn awesome. Also, Titan Quest looks like a modern game, where as Diablo 2 looked dated the minute it came out.

The multiplayer is pretty worthless but I don't care. If anyone needs some lower level blades, I've got about five low-level blues that would work really well for a warfare or rogue style character.

I give it 9 out of 10 Koreans befouling themselves in internet cafes while farming SoJs.

Supreme Commander - I'm still playing this a bunch, so I'll mention it here. I'm sort of souring over some balance issues online-basically, one side is pretty over the top in 1-vs-1 play and the technology levels break down after the first tier or so in competitive play. It's still really fun, I like the grand scale of the game and enjoy the fact that it is completely demanding of my brain to play. It's a game of intellect and wits, and that suits me just perfect.

I do wish the AI was a little bit better so I could have more fun pick up and go skirmishes when I don't have too much time to play, but I'm pretty sure the modders will fix that in time.

I give it 10/10 single-core CPUs crying in agony while trying to model a thousand units with complete projectile physics.

Rise of Legends -This really is a great companion RTS to Supreme Commander. It offers the complete complement to that game-Supreme Commander's intentionally sterile settings contrast greatly with Rise of Legends' fantastic art design. Rise of Legends has a terrific and very meaty single-player campaign with varied objectives, which, when played at the highest difficultly, require a lot of fast thinking and smarts to finish-this is in comparison to Supreme Commander's terrible campaign mode, which is really very boring and consists of "BREAK THIS TURTLIN HO AI". Skirmish is fast and fluid, and the AI is very good.

There's lots of micro, but it's easy to manage due to a good interface. Probably the best $10 I can remember spending on a game.

I give it 8/10 steampunk death stars.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic- Just about done with this one, and I'm glad I didn't pay any money for it-got it free with my 8800GTS. It's doing some pretty cool things from a engine perspective-good physics, nice outdoor areas, etc, but I don't play an engine I play a game. Even on the hardest settings, the game is frightfully simple and the AI just can't handle some of the tactics that you can employ against it. The plot is really dull and the constant juvenile dialogue didn't do much for me either. Tom Chick's review is pretty much on spot for the game.

I rate it five out of ten slutty demons talking in your head, telling you to spam kick over and over.

I really want to play Puzzle Quest but lack any handheld gaming device to do so. If I had one, I'd buy the PSP version now and then buy the PC version when it came out for the online MP. I like the fact that the game is hard as balls, it's about time puzzling went beyond Chuzzle levels of difficulty. Not that I'm insulting Chuzzle!  :-* :-* :-*

I really enjoyed the demo for 1701 AD ( I was a HUGE fan of 1602 AD) and would like to get the full version at some point, but I am cheap and balk at the $40 price tag. I'll wait for GoGamer or Amazon reseller to get it to me for $25 shipped. This series sells like scat porn to the Germans ( I think this one sold 2.5m copies) and for darn good reason-it's probably the best city-builder out there (narrowly better than Caesar IV, which is also very good if you dig the setting).

I've given up on my Oblivion game yet again after going through a Linux-like mod install ( comparisons to Derek Smart's Desktop Commander are apt) experience only to find that the same bland, boring, uninteresting game is still there at the core and isn't going anywhere. This was my last try to enjoy it, but I did try to give it a shot. That being said, playing it on a console where you can't mod leveling creatures or the way that attributes level would be pure cock meet stapler gun pain.

I really wish Bethesda would actually put some features in to benefit metagaming in TES instead of doing whatever they can to avoid them (leading for people to use FAQs to determine how they need to metagame to be successful). This is a huge, opened-ended RPG with tons of levels, skills, and items, and yet they do nothing to let people figure out the best-ways to min-max. Some people might dig it, but given the game's completely dysfunctional narrative and mostly drab/repetitive environments, I can't see much value to this game beyond said min-maxing.

Fallout 3 is also going to suck hard. Much like Grandia 2 was really Skies of Arcadia, I can't help but think that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ($30 at CC this week, picking it up in a few) might be the real Fallout 3, while the actual Fallout 3 might just be TES4: thermonuclear mudcrab edition.

Also picking up IL-2 1946 this week. I haven't played the series since the first expansion, so I am looking to renew my love for the game, which is really super-fun when you aren't playing it on the rivet-counter difficulty settings.

An interesting month for me, i kinda overspent tho :(

Bullet Witch. A really fun action game where you shoot shit and use superpowers to kill zombie soldiers and various demons. The superpowers are really fun and some of them incredibly gratifying to use -- such as the jedi push where you can throw cars and various objects at ennemies and tornado, where you create a giant tornado that grabs anything and throws it around the level  :D. The voice actress for the Witch sounds like your average 20yo mall goth chick, but the voice acting for the zombie soldiers is so great; they say random funny shit all the time that reminds me a lot of the skeletton soldiers in the army of darkness movie; whoever wrote the dialogs they have must have watchd that movie a lot. The first level could turn off some people since the framerate is kind of iffy in that level, but after that the game becomes more and more awesome. 8/10

Def Jam Icon: Before you say lol, I gotta say i got this game in a trade with someone who didnt like it. It's not the best game ever, but its certainly fun to play. The presentation is ace; the fighting is a bit slow; but the fights are suposed to be "realistic". I would have liked to have more fighting styles available, theres only about 8  you can use which is kind of a bummer. There arent a lot of levels too, so they get repetitive after a while. Still, the "create a label" mode is surprisingly good. In this mode, you have a hired goon for a big label guy who branches out into producing -- you have to deal with budget, aka allocating certain amounts of money for studio time, pr apparition, airplay, etc for each track you produce. You cut deals with rappers and wheter or not you thread them welll will have repercutions on their performances on the billboard and so on. You earn money from loyalties at rates you can see yourself. You also have to deal with fans, paparazies, etc. You also have to take care of "favors" for certain rappers (like medical bills, payoff, etc).

The game could had been much more, but its still enjoyable. I'd say it would be a good bargain bin investement; the game is really fun with friends. 7/10

Earth Defense Force 2017. My personal game of the month, enuff said. I take one point away because it doesnt have online coop. 9/10

I haven't been playing much lately, except I started playing FF6 Advance on the plane rides back and forth to Miami this weekend. The sound quality is weak in the port, specifically the cursor/selection sound effects which are horrible. Played a bit of the SOTN demo, I'm still not sure whether or not I'm gonna bite, as I've already beat the game a few times on PS1 and I'm kinda sick of Metroidvanias. Next games I'm getting are Beyond Oasis (VC), Marble Mania, and Super Paper Mario, then I'm gonna probably start Okami soon, and play both Beyond Oasis and Legend of Oasis.

Def Jam Icon is pretty much everything I hate about videogames...

I might get Puzzle Quest, too. Probably the DS version because I'm too embarassed to be seen in public with a PSP  ::)

Orochi Musou (PS2)- Still playing this a week later...brought it over to my buddy's house over the weekend for some co-op action, but he wasn't really keen on the split screen play.  I have to agree that on some of the stages, particularly the last (normal) level where you fight Orochi himself, the split screen made it difficult to see where the hell we were going at times, but it was still fine.  He was just bitchin' because he's been spoiled by Shin Sangoku Musou 4 Special on 360, I think.  I had to put the difficulty on easy for him since he kept losing; now I have to go back and beat the last two stages of that campaign again on normal to unlock the final dream stage.   I'm probably going to make use of a PAR code to unlock all the characters; it's going to take forever to unlock all 77+ characters, and I really just want to use my favorites and beat the game already.

Sengoku Basara 2 (PS2)- Still the best Musou game ever made, even if Musou Orochi offers some cool new features.  SB2 is just all-around the better game.  I hope the expansion, Eiyuu Gaiden, gets an English release this time around.

Castlevania SOTN (360)- Slowly making my way through this game for the umpteenth time.  It's still fun to play.

I need to get back to Metal Gear Portable Ops, Virtua Fighter 5, and Gundam Musou.

This week's new release for me is going to be the long-awaited PS2 port of Hokuto No Ken, by Arc System Works.

It just didn't seem as good as Soul Calibur 2 was. Now that I have unlocked a bunch of the armors, the create a character is not too bad, and I am enjoying the Tales of Souls having a choose your own adventure style. Chronicles of the sword was pretty fun too, Although beating some of the characters was a pain in the ass.

I still think Hwang should have been a main character instead of just a bonus character.  :'(

Also the music for the opening movie wasn't very rocking, and it has always been rocking in the Soul Calibur series.

Everything i've heard about the DS version of puzzle quest has not been terribly good. DS has plenty of great games, forced stylus puzzle quest is not one of them. I mean you can say OH USUAL WRITING OFF DS AGAIN but you can ask Drinky or TVC, I play a lot of DS games, I think I might have picked up more DS games than even you did last Christmas season.

That being said I ruffed up all the knights in the knighthood trials and totalled some orcs, im finally getting the hang of this game!

I'm glad that you're supporting the DS, MAF - but I still take exception to shit like "forced" stylus use - how come Ninty didn't make Zoo Keeper or Meteos forced stylus? Seems like the designers wanted it that way. And even if it's just a little bitty bug, there's STILL a bug in the PSP version that isn't in the DS version.

Whatever. GameFly STILL hasn't shipped my copy, and the waiting is just getting me deeper and deeper into Puzzle Pirates. Now THAT should be on some portable system.

The DS' screen size and touch mechanics simply cannot compensate for the amount of information packed on the puzzle quest screen, and the fact you are penalized for 'illegal moves'. This would not be an issue if the player wasnt forced to use the stylus, like in the PSP version where very precise digital pad inputs do the job just fine.

Its not because its prettier.

Digital controls are a lot more precise. When you make bad moves in puzzle quest you are penalized. I would rather not get the situational 'initial 10 damage against undead' modifier provided by some companion than get penalized because the stylus control scheme forced upon me is inadequate for moving pieces around.

Now dont get me wrong, I dont doubt your ability to be an apologist when you end up getting your copy, but up to this point ive played a hell of a lot more of this game than you have so you'll just have to hold off on spinnin those lies till then.

the "bug" ain't much of one, anyhow. the ds stylus implementation is very unforgiving, by all accounts.

Now dont get me wrong, I dont doubt your ability to be an apologist when you end up getting your copy, but up to this point ive played a hell of a lot more of this game than you have so you'll just have to hold off on spinnin those lies till then.

What "lies" have I told, MAF? This oughta be interesting.

I'm interested in hearing these "lies", but other than that, consider me out of this discussion. Obviously, the PSP version is far superior and I'm stuck with my early 90's touchy tech.

Distant: You noticed it too? It seems way harder to play the game with the sixaxis than VF4 Evo was with the DS2

Weren't the original ones turn-based rpgs? I know NEO and EXA are action-rpgs. I picked up EXA but im going to avoid NEO.

I'm glad I didn't listen to the distinguished mentally-challenged fellows that review games these days and picked it up. I give it 8 dewy-eyed Himuros writing Haruhi Suzumiya fanfic out of 10.

FUCK YOU DUDE. I HATE Haruhi

I played some of Shining Force Neo and it was AWFUL.

Actually, the sixaxis is just fine. I meant that I need to buy a second controller so people can play against me.

Fist Fan-service + Guilty Gear = Awesomeness.  :D

The roster is kinda unbalanced though.
