TOTAL RECALL: Solid candidate for best scifi movie ever?
« on: August 26, 2006, 03:27:21 AM »
It's a total bastardization of the PKD story it's based on, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen.  Special effects that look banging' to this day (they've aged better than CG effects from 5 years ago), a neat little plot, and ARNIE in top form.  In Verhoeven we trust.

Starship Troopers is very good, but I think Total Recall has a much better plot, and better performances.  Mind you, Starship Troopers has some of the satirical bits that made Robocop so good, but I'm rating on a scifi scale, not a satirical cleverness scale.

Alien is a good movie, but it's a suspense movie that happens to take place in space.  Total Recall is a flat out science fiction movie.  It's very good, and it uses the scifi setting for maximum effectiveness, but labeling it as scifi would be like calling Apocalypse Now a vietnam movie.

Aliens is a shitty action movie so it's eliminated from the running.

Well, I don't agree that Total Recall is better than Starship Troopers or Alien, but I respect your opinion.

Alien is at the very least almost as good, but it's not on the same level of scifi-ness.  Much like Event Horizon, I'd say it's more of a haunted house in space than a troo scifi movie.

Starship Troopers has a lot of flash, and a bit of substance.  It's fun to watch but it wouldn't be near my favorite scifi flick list.

I guess I don't like Total Recall as much as I should because of some of the cheesier moments, and the fact that I have to watch a movie where Arnold Schwarzeneger is given more than a handful of lines  :-X

Oddly enough, I find Arnold more swallowable as a scifi lead than I do Keanu Reeves.

Upon further review, TR does have the "I wish I had three hands" scene, so that might tie it with Alien (which yes is a horror film, but is classified as a Sci-Fi film as well). Still, I happen to like Starship Troopers a bit more than Total Recall...  :-[

I think the "three hands" scene is probably the last remnant of Piers Anthony's script that managed to make it into the shooting script.

Oh, and TR has the awesome "losing air on Mars" effects, which make Ah-nold look even crazier than he does in Batman and Robin. Even so, Starship Troopers has too many golden moments to count...

Only if by "golden" you mean "dated CG."  It's also pretty hokey.

Total Recall is based off a short story that doesn't resemble the movie all that much.  Starship Troopers is based off a Republi-porn book that doesn't resemble the movie that much.

Actually, in some ways. Starship Troopers the Movie is the antithesis of the novel.  Heinlen's book was basically advocating fascism.  The movie makes a satire of that.

That too. 12 Monkeys and Terminator 2 certainly aren't the greatest sci fi movies ever, but they are so much better than TR that it's not funny.
