Evilbore's Good and Bad of Next Generation Consoles
« on: March 25, 2007, 12:22:38 AM »
Time to be honest guys. For each system bring up your GOOD and BAD points.

Xbox 360
+Xbox Live is still on top.
+Excellent first few years in terms of games and support.
+Microsoft making a PROFIT!

-Software "Backwards Compatibility" dependent on SUPPORT that isnt there.
-Xbox Live 'purchase points'. (I may spend em eventually but come on)
-New hardware version already? :(

PS3
+Hardware based Backwards Compatibility (for now BUM BUM BUM)
+Sony's online currency is the SAME AS THE UNITED STATES'!
+Virtua Fighter 5 got here first.

-Sony Store is near empty despite a gigantic PSone library.
-Games? I mean aside from two I want, I cant think of anything else till late this year :(
-The console cooks in its own juices and has esoteric shut down proceedures.

Wii
+Popularizing gaming with a new demographic, scary for sure, but not completely bad.
+Wii Play Bowling
+Not ushering the gaming public into a bizzare online virtual world where you see movies with virtual people (see Sony)

-Most games force the use of the waggle 'feature'. (see Metal Slug Grenade Issue)
-Most of the best Nintendo licenses not present at launch, save for a developed for gamecube Zelda.
-Im sorry, but for 250, I need more than the ability to waggle my controller and light bloom.

Nintendo DS
+OMG inhereted awesome GBA library
+OMG lots of support
+OMG last christmas season

-Stylus sucks unless a game is designed around it. There's a reason PDA Gaming isnt en vogue.
-Second screen sucks unless a game is designed around it.
-Online functionality is a little...labored.

Sony PSP
+For us graphic whores, there isnt a better handheld experience.
+A versitle little machine
+Decent support recently has pulled it out of the port-station category

-Lol UMD WTF BIG MOMMAS HOUSE
-Price Drop Please. Wtf new hardware version already?
-Battery Life ultimately am a little cry

I don't own all of the next gen systems, but I'll still give some impressions.

What I do own:
Xbox360
Nintendo DS
and.... that's it :( Looking forward to getting a Wii sometime soon though.

Anyways:

Xbox 360

+ Live is definitely the best thing going for 360, they did a great job implementing it as well as the Live Arcade (my personal favorite). Good job on making the Live user interface easy and pleasing to go through. Also it's fun getting free content like trailers and trial games/demos.

+ 2 years of solid games and hits under their belt, lots of support and upcoming awesomeness like Fable 2 :drool

- Games are 59.99 :(
- I agree, points are gay, I have like 50 left over that are wasted money because I can't spend it on anything.
- The hardware itself seems a bit shoddy :/ Too many 'broken xbox' complaints. I'm worried about my own dying soon.

PS3

+ Exclusives was one of my main reasons for considering a PS3, but at this rate we'll see how long they really stay 'exclusive'

- OMG $600
- $600?
- $600!
- Backwards compatibility might be gone
- No games, nada.
- Blu-ray? Not interested.

Wii

+ Nicely priced
+ Interesting and outside of the norm video gaming. Seems like a great way to get a group of friends over for some party games.
+ Nintendo's dedication to good craftsmanship in both games and hardware (maybe not in graphics, but they do concentrate on making them fun though!)
+ Blockbuster first party titles: Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda, Warioware
+ Backwards compatibility with GC and GC controllers (yay!)

- lacking in power
- Does it even play DVDs? :/
- The wii-controller and nun-chuck(?) seems a bit odd at first - also expensive to purchase more
- No HD

Sony PSP

+ Great resolution and graphics for a handheld, impressive
+ Awesome modding scene, or so I hear :shh
+ Doubles for a media player as well, though I already have a much smaller mp3 player

- A bit pricey for a handheld
- UMD. I don't want to pay twice for movies, nor do I want to watch one on such a small screen
- Compared to DS, the games just don't seem to be as much "fun" and interactive
- More for the "serious" gamers

Nintendo DS

+ FUN!
+ Lower price than a PSP
+ Cheaper games
+ Did I mention that the games on it are just plain fun and intuitive? Games like Trauma Center, Wario Ware, Nintendo Dogs, Brain Age etc are just an awesome use of the stylist that appeal to both young and old. Even my father-in-law is interested in a DS for Brain Age alone, lol.
+ Backwards compatible!
+ DS lite has a very slick design and long battery life
+ Final Fantasy 3 :heart

- I can think of none. I have always hated handhelds until the DS. Nintendo definitely did something right.
- oh wait, I just asked Prost for a negative: "the screen is a bit small"

The touch screen being small is a negative for games that require precise stylus controls (puzzle quest) but even so it still works ok for elite beat agents and the like.

XBOX 360 PROS:
+ Acheivements. I have to admit, these are enough to make me go 360 on the multiplatform games.
+ It has all the amenities that modern consoles should have. Background downloading, even when playing single-player. Can read off of network shares to play music, even in-game. Comes with headsets.
+ The core pack is only $50 more than a Wii!
+ Beautiful, beautiful picture in my TV's native resolution at all times. It boots up in 720p, it stays in 720p.

XBOX 360 CONS:
+ SHUT THE FUCK UP! GOD, FUCK YOU!
+ We shouldn't be paying for online play or "unlock keys" for on-the-disc content.
+ The selection of XBLA games is pretty weak compared to VC

PS3 PROS:
+ Blu-ray is incredible, I don't care what anyone says
+ HDMI is impeccable, too. It just has to be said.
+ I think the "best of all worlds" approach will pay off in the end. When they have free online play, downloadable classics, waggle, acheivement-equivalents, and a "Mii"-like community, I think they'll be sitting pretty
+ Final Fantasy XIII. I feel like Bart at Kamp Krusty clinging to that shit, but what can I say.
+ It is absolutely whisper quiet. God bless you Sony, you do know how to make a good piece of hardware.

PS3 CONS:
+ WTF at the lack of amenities that I'm accustomed to from Microsoft? Background downloading was half-implemented, plugging in USB cable for updates, no auto-update notification, the back-compat was fucked up for my first 40 hours of FFXII, no SMB support even though you can download the protocol docs for free, no power button on the remote control I ordered WTFFFFFFFFF!!!1
+ It has a scaler chip, huh? Maybe it would be cool to FUCKING USE IT. "I'm in 1080i! I'm in 480p! Errrg, this sucks!" -- says my 720p TV, that my 360 treats oh-so-tenderly
+ $599 U.S. Dollars
+ Show me your Pokemans, Sony. And by Pokemans, I mean games, because the library sucks.
+ You've got to be kidding with that online store.

WII PROS:
+ So cheap
+ Only consumes 18 crappy watts of power? That is seriously like in the range of an iPod. You could run it off an auto-adapter in your car. And it only gets warm-ish.
+ Have to admit, Wii Sports has me interested in what they're going to do with this waggle thing
+ Virtual Console + Classic Controller = Awesome. Perfect SNES emulation on my big TV with the slick, wireless controller = bliss.
+ I hear Zelda: TP is good or something. I haven't played it. Mario Galaxy looks good, and hell, I'll even check out Metroid Prime 3, becuase FPS should be decent with the Wiimote.

WII CONS:
+ I will never stop hating the lack of HDTV, even with component cables / 480p. It would've made all the difference in the world, their crappy graphics probably would've run the same speed, but no. Standard-def only.
+ This fucking guy. Am I like, associated with him, for owning this thing? Seriously. Nintendo fans are fucking crazy.
+ The VC prices should've been about half what they are. $5 for Urban Champion? The real cart goes for 25 cents at Goodwill, you cunts.

Word to that. Netflix sending those Blu-Ray discs to my house totally stimulates my nerd gland. Although I have adopted Blu-Ray to the tune of about $250 in purchases. All in all, I think I've seen everything on Blu-Ray that is out that interests me. :/

I agree. If I wanted older games I would just download them for free on my computer :shh

I like some of the original games on live. Geometry Wars, Marble Blast Ultra, Alien Hominid (ok not original, but it ROCKS as a multiplayer XBL game), Outpost Kaloki.

It is loud up close, but I play far away from the system and keep the volume high.

PS3 had a hardware revision four months after launch...I have no faith in it.

360:

+I've never been this hyped for a single console's line-up in a year.
+cheaper than what wii currently is soon.
+everything works very nicely.  Wireless, tons of shit to download, the only annoying thing about the console's software I've ever found was one time when it didn't record an achievement.
+So far has one motherfucking hell of a line-up.

-BC is glitchy for a few of the games that work and a lot don't work.
-not much on XBLA.  Needs to start distinguishing itself from cell phone games and upscaled port-ups.

PS3:

+great media device.  It's just a more open box than 360 is.
+probably will get the only HD version of Shin Megami Tensei.
+rumble (soon)+gyro+normal controller.
~price, who the fuck knows what's going to happen?  I could probably import one from Germany for less than it would cost to buy it here.
~aesthetics, fucking huge but it's a console but it's really weird looking for a console so some people may not like it.
-doesn't have any exclusives I want to play.
-fucked up EXCUSE of a OS compared to the 360 and Wii in functionality and convenience.
-3/4 of multiplatform games have 360 as lead platform because XNA makes it easier to polish up your game faster than it on PS3.
-future ones to have only software bc that is probably going to miss a lot of good games and has no graphical update.
-Gabe Newell's shit smears on it STILL FUCKING SMELL.

Wii:

+Metroid Prime 3, my main reason to buy one.
+just the fact that it's a wii and it doesn't have a tray-loading drive make me at least willing to let a kid play on it without me there.
+might get many exclusives (especially in Japan).
~price, cheap (going to be cheaper soon) but it's definitely still a console that feels like it's in it's first four months because it has only a couple good games to play.
-no HD, makes a huge difference.  I personally don't care when I'm playing a game as long as it doesn't get below 320X240 so I can read.
-no normal games.  The changes they made to dragon quest are really damn weird.  I fear that major games that get a cheap version (maybe only version) on wii will get a spin-off of the normal gameplay.
-expensive controllers and it's mainly meant as a party system.  I mean you don't see ass-fucking four controller bundles for 360 or PS3.

360
+ most powerful hardware at the best price.
+ omg games omg.
+ omg xbox live arcade omg.
- backwards compatibility lol.
- reliability ain't all there (although i've had nary a problem).
- smaller media size might hurt over time.

PS3
+ seems reliable despite being a small furnace and good backwards compatibility.
+ vf5 early!
+ media size is nice.
- a little weaker than the 360 for $200 more wtf. segmented ram ftl.
- weak library and very little decent dl content.
- sixaxis feels janky.

Wii
+ there are no pluses. it's crap.
- mii faggotry.
- waggle faggotry.
- last-gen hardware faggotry.
- no decent network gaming support faggotry.
- only owned by disgusting ninthing fan faggotry.
- 3 megabyte framebuffer faggotry = 16-bit dithering faggotry and shit image quality faggotry.
- no hd support faggotry.
- 64 megabytes of ram faggotry.
- possibly the shittiest console ever made faggotry.

PSP
+ greatest handheld gaming library ever.
+ hardware omg omg omg omg omg omg omg omg it still amazes.
- umd is stupid.
- unlock fucking 333mhz already.

DS
+ uh
+ has a few roguelikes, i guess, and yoshi's island ds is awesome. uhh. i have seven games and i can only recall izuna and yoshi's island ds. what else is there to play again? the castlevanias, i guess. um.
+ devs have stopped taking the stylus seriously, which is nice.
- kinda weak library.
- terrible graphics hardware.
- terrible sound hardware.
- gives the feggits that play animal crossing continued reason to live.
- pretty damn fuckin' ghetto

Quote
Inaccurate, as was confirmed after Bethesda said this last time, bluray loads at a constant 9 megabytes/second on both the inner edge and outer edge fo both single and dual layered bluray discs.

DVD loads at 16 megabytes/second only on the outer edge of single layered discs, 8 megabytes on the inner edge, and even slower for dual layered discs (which most if not all 360 games are pressed on)

Doesn't make a difference in the graphics since most of the problems are low framerates and bad lighting.  Doubt ram has held back a multiplatform game that much yet.

so given an even distribution of files per sector, we have an average seek time of 11.3333 mb/s for dvd and 9 mb/s for blu-ray. how'm i wrong again?

blu-ray can theoretically load data faster if they use the extra space to place duplicate data blocks in multiple sectors, though.

DS:

+Solid library of games
+Great battery life
+Very portable
-Recently not much has interested me; it gets used as a Kanji dictionary far more than for gaming

PSP:

+Lots of great games
+Hacked firmware rules all
+333mhz = AWESOME
+Emulation is excellent.  CPS2 and Neo-Geo games...perfectly emulated on the go?  YES PLEASE
+Feels like a portable console done right
-Battery life is short, especially with 333mhz

Xbox 360:

+Solid librbary of games, always something coming out every month of interest
+Xbox Live is fantastic
+Asian games only cost $39.99
-Xbox Live customer service sucks
-I can't use my credit card with Live
-Point cards from different regions are incompatible
-Backwards compatibility sucks
-No web browser.  All of the other next-gen systems have browsers available.

Playstation 3:

+The most powerful system yet
+Has a decent line-up for having been out for only a few months
-Need more games
+Backwards compatiblity is excellent.  Some games look better and even load faster.
-Online component stinks
+Web browser is great after recent update

Wii:

+Great design
+Multiplayer Wii sports is fun
-Wii Sports doesn't last very long
-Game library leaves much to be desired
-Feels like nothing more than a Game Cube with a different controller
-The controller generally feels gimmicky and/or not used correctly
-Virtual Console sucks compared to Xbox Live Arcade.  Even the PSN Store is better with games like Gripshift and Tekken 5 DR available.
+Backwards compatibility is excellent
-You have to use a Game Cube controller AND memory card to play GC games
-You need a GC controller or classic controller for some Virtual Console games

Basically right now most of my play time is on the PSP and Xbox 360, plus the PS2.  Both the PS3 and Wii need improvement.  I'm not worried about the PS3, but the Wii just sits here unplayed.  If it doesn't get some good game announcements within the next six months, I'll likely sell it off.

PS3

Pros:
+ Region free -- The fact that I'll be able to play all the weird/anime/weird anime games from Japan that will never come out in North America without having to mod my PS3 is a huge plus in my book.
+ Blu Ray player
+ HDMI functionality
+ Free online play
+ Has a nice number of games that I want this early in it's lifespan.
+ Final Fantasy XIII

Cons:
- The PS3 gets really hot.
- Current lack of DVD upconversion. It's not that big of a deal since I have a upconverting player, though.
- Limited number of demos on the Playstation Store
- Small number of available titles. But, this is what it's like for all early adopters for every system.

It upscales DVD video for 720p now --  a recent OS update (1.60 I think) enabled it. (It also now supports 720p for Blu-Ray video; previously, it only supported 480p and 1080i/p. Yes, Sony is distinguished mentally-challenged.) BC doesn't upscale, althopugh some software emulation updates are supposed to provide for it.

XBOX360

+ Ze Games! Great future lineup.
+ XBOX LIVE, unmatched service and online features
+ Zomg XBLA YES
+ ONLY 400$ for the non tard pack (AND IT COMES WITH A  HEADSET, THANKS MS)

PS3 (I DONT OWN ONE, UPCOMING LULZ BELOW)

+ Its a sexy looking machine, props.
+ Linux/Webbrowser w00t
+ VF5 (better version coming soon to 360)

- psonline (lol, seriously wtf) incredibly inferior to xbox live, although you get more then what you pay for.
- Games, what games?
- 600 ...Seriously? I expect better looking games for a higher price.
- controller is overly light, rehashed form, tacked on motion sense, no rumble, broken wireless controller.

NINTENDU WII (dont own one)

+ Glossy White is in says ipod jackoffs
+ Small
+ Good looking first party games (SSBB, SPM, SMG)

- third party games (gamecube syndrom)
- Not HD or good looking games. Not next gen graphics
- repackaged (overclocked) gamecube with waggle wand
- waggle wand
- 250 for this shit is rape plain and simple
- no earthbound on VC (FUCK YOU NINTENDO) That and VC is just overpriced roms is lame.

--->

HANDHELDS (I OWN BOTH):

PSP

+ Sexy, sleek black design
+ decent but not great game linup
+ FREE GAMEZ

the 360 does a very poor job at upscaling video material, its only advantages being that it can upscale to 1080p (a rare feature in standalones), and that loading times in disc menus are greatly reduced since of the 12x DVD-ROM drive

the differences of performance with a standalone upscaling DVD player equipped with a dedicated de-interlacing chipset is dramatic, there simply is no comparison, the amount of interlacing arterfacts and flickering present in problem titles is enormous, alike to the performance of a 40$ Wal-Mart chinese player, and the picture that the 360 sends out over VGA is terribly washed out

if you believe that it's great it's just because you don't know better

360

+Most value for your money
+Up to date technology at a price $200 cheaper than the PS3, runs great in 720p
+Currently the best next-gen software lineup by far
+Getting some of the most exciting next-gen games - Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery, Halo 3
+XBL - the best online interface by far; achievements, friend lists, game comparisons, download demos and movie trailers and other stuff
+XBLA
-XBLA's one game a week policy, lots of shitty ports of lame retro games
-Hardware problems, though this hasn't happened to me yet
-Microtransactions
-Sounds like a 747 engine
-Still needs more Japanese support; I hate most American games

Wii

+Virtual Console! Near-flawless emulation, controls great with the Classic Controller, lots of random releases
+Super Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda
+Controls work a lot better than originally expected for certain games (Koropinia, WiiSports especially)
+Has a much better chance of getting this hobby some respect than Okami or SOTC or any of these artsy-fartsy games
+Small, quiet, and nice design
-Needs a way to access VC games off of an SD card DESPERATELY
-Where's the online? Hopefully Brawl gets this right.
-Shoehorned Wiimote controls into a lot of games
-Ubisoft dumping ground. Seriously, these guys are probably the worst company in gaming, right down there with THQ.
-No HD support

PS3

+MGS4 and FF13 (but for how much longer?)
-$599
-Software lineup with the exception of VF5 is really weak
-Weakest retro game download service... Who the hell wants Cool Boarders and Crash Bandicoot and all this other lame first-gen PSX software? Who wants to also transfer it to play on PSP, instead of getting to play it on the TV like everyone wants?
-Losing exclusives left and right to 360
-Blu-Ray is pretty pointless
-Scaling problems from what I hear
-Weak online setup

DS

+Great software library
+Great 2D games
+GBA backwards compatibility
+Nice screen with barely any ghosting
+Fairly comfortable
+Solid hardware - you know you can throw this thing across the room and it'll still work
-Shoehorned touch screen/2 screen features (this isn't that much of a problem anymore)
-Weak 3D graphics, even more painful when a shitty developer (*cough*Ubisoft*cough) attempts 3D on the system

PSP

+Lumines, UGnG, Gurumin, and Every Extend Extra
-Horrible D-Pad which makes it near-impossible to move diagonally
-Load times
-Screen ghosting
-Disappointing software library; too many downgraded PS2 games, too many "urban" games, lots of RPGs but most of them are generic and mediocre
-Sony's awful policies that blocked some of the better Japanese ports (Tengai Makyo 4 port, Tales of Eternia port) from hitting the US
^_^

360:

+ Great line up
+ Great controller, probably the best traditonal controller yet
+ Great interface
+ Great design
+ Great online service

- Too loud
- The accessories rape you up the ass.
- The core SKU sucks (but I will probably get one anyways)
- Backwards Compatibility doesn't include a lot from my Xbox collection
- New Hardware version already? What if I want HDMI later? I'm going to have to buy a new unit? Lame.

PS3:

+ Free online service
+ Sequels to interesting games
+ Nice value for your buck
+ HDD = omg
+ Wireless controller = omg

- Most of the most interesting looking games are being ported
- Online service isn't at good as XBL, but at least it tries
- The controller is kinda sucky. The half assed triggers take away from the appeal of the old ps design, and they should have gone with something like 360's controller.
- The thing screams same old, same old. Not many new and interesting IP's, mostly sequels, most of the features are taken from other hardware, nothing screams new and exciting.
- The price, while having nice value, isn't good enough value for gamers. It is for someone who's interested in multimedia players, but for someone who just wants to play games it's not worth it yet. This makes PS3 seem like an over glorified blu ray player.

Wii:
+ Nice design.
+ Comfortable controller.
+ Interesting new ways to control games
+ Mii's are kinda cool I guess and it's fun trading them with others.
+ Virtual Console.

- The developers don't take advantage of the hardware, and make the graphics look subpar pre- Dreamcast.
- It's a Nintendo console. This means lack of games.
- Virtual console titles cost too fucking much.
- The controls for the most part are gimmicky so far, or have a really long learning curve, making a lot of the released Wii games hard to get into.
- The remote sometimes gets gay, and you have to point at the tv to get results. This can feel intrusive when playing an immersive game because the Wii has to warn you to point at the tv and it's ridiculous.

uh, I watch my DVDs on an Oppo Digital player, now go ahead and compare that kind of hardware's DVD playback performance to that of the 360, there's simply no comparison

many anime titles which come from interlaced video sources are simply unwatchable on the 360

and the PS3 has nothing to do with that, its performance is probably pretty poor too-- these solutions can't compare to a standalone with a specialized de-interlacing chipset

yeah, I have a $500 Samsung upscaling DVD player and I'm at a loss to tell the difference between it and the 360's performance. Don't be a hater!

I don't think I've watched *any* anime on it and my HDTV. If I do watch anime these days, it's a shitty One Piece fansub on the PC.

usually Samsung's DVD players are badly rated

and for the typical 35MM Hollywood film stuff it's going to matter less anyway

but the 360's DVD player is definitely not a great contraption from a videophile point of view

ps3

gay, not even remotely close to forced to buy it since all the games are coming to the x360 anyway, which brings me to my second point

x360

awesome

wii

mostly gay, forced to buy it because of weird nintendo games that i just have to play

psp

pretty sweet, mostly because i dont actually have to support the device

ds

pretty sweet, mostly because it has games that i want so i have to support the device

Of course, but I don't like to read it on a weekly basis. I like to not read for months at a time, and then have one big long ass One Piece marathon. It's too good for me to wait weekly.
