VF5 Gamespot review basically dinged the game for not having online play. I would like to point out that the DoA series, a much SLOPPIER and forgiving fighter barely works online. Half the DoA games I played online suffered lag issues.

I simply cant IMAGINE attempting to counter with Aoi against a high ping. Jesus christ people Online isnt for EVERYTHING!

Ive noticed that a lot of gaming journalists lick the back of a gorrilas ass.

There is absolutely no reason to deduct points off a good game due to lack of online play. Unless its like an RTS or FPS which are traditionally online genres

No one around here plays fucking VF dude. They think it's too slow and boring. And I don't want to play online for the competition, I want it for fun. I don't understand why it's so impossible to not implement online play. DOA did it expertly.

It should be REQUIRED for all fighters to be online now.

Himuro dont be simple. Online fighters dont actually WORK. Its you making allowances for horrible performance, or the developers creating fighters so shallow the implications of lag impacting the game dont matter.

It's just that I don't see why they DON'T work. It makes no sense. You can have death matches with 16 + people with hardly any lag but a game that demands only 2 characters fighting it out can't have better, if not the same performance?

I'm just saying that these devs haven't tried hard enough to bring us lag free online fighters, becase it just makes no damn sense!

Take for example DoA4, a game with LARGE counter windows. Take VF5, a game with small counter windows. Now which game do you think is better vs latency? DoA4, because the larger window actually mitigates the effect of latency. There's just more give.

Now look at VF5, a game with a small counter window that requires almost exact timing. Add to that latency of the internet and you have a recipie in frustration and dare I say, an unplayable fighter.

'But MAF! Why dont games just get developed to deal with online issues!'

Because LARGE windows for moves and combo strings = shallow moveset that requires little skill to master. Creating fighting games FOR online ultimately results in a bad fighting game.

The internet. In its bloated glory is not FAST enough to deal with fighting games. I mean latency is a big enough issue with FPS games online. This isnt an RTS or MMORPG or Diablo II where latency can be handled client side either.

All those old games on the homebrew emulators that ran online couldnt even get it right and they existed in 2D!

i sighed.

fighting games cannot programmatically compensate for latency -- the fundamental nature of their gameplay is anathema to latency. fps games, rts games and racing games can use various tricks to compensate for network latency -- "tracers", predictive interpolation, ghost states. none of these apply to fighting games.

Naw, fuck that shit.  Even if it's still far from perfect, online play should be standard in home console fighting game releases at this point.  If you're a purist and can't take online, you don't have to play.  It's only an option.

That said, knocking a fighting game for not having online in a review is just plain distinguished mentally-challenged.  It should be mentioned, but not something to be used to bring the score down.

the fact that time, money and efforts must be wasted in every modern game to include an option that very few will ever use and that becomes useless in a few weeks/months'time since everyone stops playing it (save if it's a blockbuster), just contributes to turn modern games into poorer experiences compared to the old stuff

I applaud Sega for doing this and hope for other majors to follow soon

lyte edge: come ON you cant honestly say that the fighting experience in DoA4 or MAME while online is any good.

You dont have to be a purist to get pissed off at frameskips lag losses.

Actually I've had plenty of matches in DOA4 that were lag-free, particularly against other players in Japan.  Not everyone has a shitty connection.

DoA4 is a fuckin' trainwreck. Go get some REAL LIFE FRIENDS WHO PLAY FIGHTERS.

DOA4 is fun as fuck and manages to improve on itself from the previous games, be packed with modes and features, AND has online play.

My friends that like to play fighters are back in the States.  I can't go over to their houses and play with them whenever I want to.  I can however meet up with them for matches online, plus play with a ton of other people.  The more competition, the better.

I can only hope that VF5 on 360 will offer online play, but it's so obviously not happening.  :/
