John McCain Nearly Became A Democrat In 2001
« on: March 29, 2007, 09:30:21 AM »
Woah. It may be hard to remember with the Iraq War loving, Bush worshiping McCain that is out there today but McCain was once the Lieberman of the Republican Party who was in feud with Bush and strongly against the religious right's pull. This was much bigger than imagined because McCain had his advisors meet with the Democrat Senate leadership in 2001 about leaving the republican party and joining the democrats. It fell through but this is insane.  :lol My gut instinct is if he did join the Democrats in 2001 like he was planning then I bet the Democrats would try to nominate him for president in 2004 to get his "revenge" for 2000. Insane how quickly things have changed with McCain.

This type of stuff is why Rudy has a lock on the nomination. Rudy is more socially liberal but he is loyal to the party.

I do wonder if this "new" McCain is really him. Is it just a public face?

Is the the McCain who is disgusted with the Christian right and George Bush still there?

Remember John McCain's closest ally in the senate was JOHN KERRY till he decided he wanted to be the republican nominee in 2008.

 :(

He wants power so bad that he'll suck up to anyone. In this case, the people he has to suck up to hate his guts.

If he didn't sell his soul post 2000 he could have ran as a independent in 2008 and possibily won. Remember there was a day when there was no politician more highly beloved by the public than John McCain.

If we didn't have the stupid closed primary workings that we have today and general elections were basicially open primaries with winner take all McCain would have been elected president in 2000.

This is why I think he considered switching parties, 2000 McCain would have gotten a huge warm welcome in the democratic party back then and had a very good shot at getting the '04 nod from them.
