Educate me on HDMI
« on: March 29, 2007, 01:39:13 PM »
this was said in an article on the Xbox 360 Elite:

Microsoft also added an HDMI connection, which sends high-definition content from the console to the TV without losing picture or sound quality, while also helping prevent piracy.

What does HDMI do to help prevent piracy? I dont get it.

generally speaking when it comes to the lossless transmission of video signals that HDMI offers, it means that the signal cannot be captured

something that would be helpful in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD's cases

the HDMI device refuses to send an HDCP-protected signal if it cannot synchronize with an HDCP-compatible HD monitor to encrypt the transmission, something called the "HDMI handshake"

Hollywood majors would be scared if perfect copies could be digitally captured from a Blu-Ray disc, but for game makers there is no interest in this

for some reason though every PS3 game signal sent through HDMI is encrypted with HDCP

Oh ok, so it prevents copying movies from a disc toooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....I mean its all going through the 360/PS3 so handshaking would go on with a digital copy on the harddrive too right?

They'll probably make all bootlegs, players, and HDTV's in china not encrypt/encrypt the same so you could just buy it from there if you wanted an HD player.

The PS3 has issues with handshaking with certain LCDs. But yeah, the handshaking aspect prevents various capture devices from being used and capturing HDDVD and BD movies. Thats the extent that it goes though. Also, what Bacon said. The HDMI revision is one step below the PS3s. I don't know what the .3 revision has (other than that Deep Color technology?).

Whats stupid is, I think HDMI 1.2 was around when the 360 first came out (or was it 1.1?) Either way, MS could have had an actual HDMI built into the 360...coming out with a new SKU just for HDMI and a bigger harddrive..is...odd.
