Have any of you guys ever traveled to foreign countries?
« on: April 05, 2007, 11:26:23 PM »
How many folks here have traveled abroad?  Where have you gone?  What did you do?  Did you enjoy it?  For the folks who haven't traveled abroad, is there any place you want to go? Why or why not?  What would you like to do if you traveled outside of your home country?

I went on a hot and wild (innuendo meant) cruise a couple of years ago through the Carribean.  Jamaica was a shithole, for a lot of reasons, and some of the other destinations like Grand Cayman were nice, but I fell in love with Cozumel, Mexico.  People were friendly, weather was beautiful, it had culture and history and most importantly, cheap booze.

Not to sound racist, but for some reason in Europe there's a stereotype that Polish people are really stupid.  Did you find that to be true in any way?

But... I'm Polish.  :(
I only really had contact with my relatives and they're all fairly bright.

I spent five weeks in Australia with my sugar caine farmer relatives when I was in elementary school (1989). They live out in the middle of the outback in Queensland, not too far from where they filmed Survivor. Snorkled in the Great Barrier Reef, went on a wild boar hunt, went fishing for baramundi while the crocs were following us, slept out on the giant trampoline with my cousins while posionous snakes slithered below us...

I spent the summer before Kindergarten (1986) riding around Europe in a Volkswagen bus with my parents and grandparents. Went to Legoland in Denmark, visited Auschwitz in Germany, saw the Berlin wall, took a ferry over to Sweden, and stayed with our friends in The Netherlands.

I volunteered on Kibbutz Nir David in Israel during the summer of 1998 before my senior year of high school with my best friend. I worked out in the fish farm, the Australian zoo and also in the dining hall. I had originally visited in 1985 when my grandparents were volunteering there, so it was very interesting to go back thirteen years later and see how things changed. Seeing how I was there during World Cup 1998, I partied hard and drank a hell of a lot with the other volunteers (from South Africa, Germany, England, Ireland, Brazil, America).

I was in Hong Kong for changeover in the summer of 1997 with my grandparents. We then went to Guangzhou, China to visit family friends and then took the Transiberian Railway all the way over to Helsinki, Finland where we met my mom and then headed up North to Hailuoto, Finland for a family reunion.

Honeymooned in Japan this last summer with my wife. Stayed in ryokans, visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, and Miyajima Island. We both fell in love with Tokyo and are going to be heading back for our fifth wedding anniversary with the plans of making a baby while we're there.

As for a list, I've been to:

Canada
Finland
Germany
France
Belgium
Mexico
The Netherlands
Denmark
England
Sweden
Turkey
Greece
Egypt
South Africa
Japan
New Zealand
Hong Kong
China
Russia
Japan
Australia
Israel
Jordan

In the US, I've been to:
Washington
Oregon
Idaho
California
Arizona
Nevada
Colorado
Nebraska
Iowa
South Dakota
North Dakota
Montana
New York
Florida
Texas
West Virginia
Maryland
District of Columbia
Philadelphia
Illinois
Wyoming
Alaska
Hawaii

Happy Valley Goose Bay is not a major city.

There are plenty of blacks in Toronto and Montreal. I see them on the cover of the Toronto Sun quit a bit.  :P

I went Israel in '94, Italy in '99, then Japan in 2001, for a month in 2004, and have currently been living there since summer 2005.  I missed out on going to England with my folks a few years back; really wish I had gone now.

I went to canada when I was two so I just remember the snow.

Summer before last summer, I went to Europe and Iran.

In Europe, it's either very awesome or very not.  France is very not awesome.  I hate that shithole.  Some people are nice, but only a couple knew I was American and not Canadian.  Most people hate anybody that doesn't speak french because that means you don't find logic in paying 80 eurocents every time you enter or exit the freeway or in a 800 room palace with no bathrooms.  It was nice how we went on the national holiday so we got to enter the Louvre free.  The Mona Lisa is a piece of shit.  It's about 2X3 feet and had above 100 people trying to take a picture at once.  It does not look special.  They have some hella awesome sculptures there though.

Italy is awesome.  EVERYBODY IS AWESOME THERE.  They just have twice the number of cars on the road that they should.  You couldn't live there because tourism is too popular so it's crowded enough that people that live there go around on scooters in suits and short shorts.  It's weird at first because guys and girls wear short shorts.  Weather was a bit humid but it was the summer.  I didn't see a single person in that country, full of tourists that can barely drive stickshift, that wasn't nice.  The Vatican City was pretty cool if you went on a tour because obviously the guy speaks english (he was american) and it had the sistine chapel and some other place.  HUGE.  It was weird how they made you go through a metal detector to exit the "country" but it was still awesome.

First thing I noticed about Iran was holy fuck the air smells bad (pollution) and it was a nice change when they let you not go through metal detectors or anything (they only do for specific flights).  I spent a couple days in Tehran, learning how exactly you put 4 people on a motorcycle, and then we went to Mashhad.  It's basically the religious capital of Iran.  It was during a heat wave so it would get above 110 F.  Every woman wears a black robe (some don't but it's mashhad) and they check you for bombs before going to the mosque.  I liked that it because it introduced me to the squatting toilets, and considering the water in Iran gives you INSANE DIARRHEA that's pretty good.  Nobody was TOO religious I think in Mashhad because they still had condoms in pharmacies.  In Esfehan, it's probably the most normal city and my uncle was studying there.  We got there by bus and it was pretty messed up seeing the bus driver try to pay a woman for sex (there's a ton of prostitutes in Iran).  My uncle was normal, said fuck a lot but only when speaking english.  Shiraz was where most of my family lived and was pretty nice.  I used internet many times there.
