Help a guy pick an hdtv
« on: April 06, 2007, 03:25:01 PM »
Someone get dark10x over here or some shit.

My dilemma is the cost of all this. I'm going to be getting a 360 Elite next month or so and a ps3 maybe next year. I'm going to need an hdtv obviously. However, what's a really good hdtv that's also CHEAPER than the rest of the ones you typically see? 600 dollars is way too much. Also, I don't have much room to spare in my room so 30 inches or so is out of the question. I'd prefer 20 or so inches, honestly.

As a requirement I would like to have hdmi and 720p. It can be an lcd or regular tv, I don't care, as long as it's hd!

Something in the 400-500 dollar price range would be ideal!

You can probably pick up a 20" LCD for about $400 or $500.  CRTs will be cheap, but they are heavy.  I loved mine while I had it, but I couldn't take it with me to my new digs due to the weight.

Just save up 1000 bux for a 32 inch lcd hdtv and save yourself a 600 dollar short term loss.

Someone suggested this one for me:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNT1953H-19-LCD-HDTV/dp/B000N5220I/ref=sr_1_14/104-9907348-6136727?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1175887233&sr=1-14

And what features did it have? How is the average quality for these types of monitors?

CRT HDTVs have almost all the features of LCD.  Mine did 1080i, had HDMI, multiple component inputs, etc.  It was a great TV.  30" and you can probably find one bigger for in the $400 - $500 range.  The problem is that those 30"+ CRTs all weigh 90lbs or more.

CRTs are pretty much the best -- arguably, but they're so BIG and HEAVY and AGH, plus they are limited by their size.

I'm just going LCD

Dude, Himu, get a Samsung CRT.  I mean, where the fuck are you moving to and what are you doing that makes its size so prohibitive?  GET THAT DESK OUT OF YOUR ROOM AND IT WILL FIT EASY

There's a few awesome samsung models that you can buy at Best Buy for ~700 dollars

That's for 1080p

Anyways, Himu, why is your requirement HDMI if your other requirement is only 720p?  You're seriously limiting your options that way.

And what about hdmi? If I hook up the 360's hdmi cable to a tv that doesn't have hdmi will I be screwed?

Also, I'm not exactly aware of 360 Elite's coming with any other type of cable...so if I get an elite I'm stuck. Might as well get an hdmi capable tv.

360 elite is the new distinguished mentally-challenged fellow pack. OH BOY MORE HDD SPACE THEN I WILL EVER USE, AND ITS BLACK.

If the hdmi cable is sold on its own, as it probably will be, it ceases to be important. Not that HDMI is anything worth paying extra for.

HDMI cables have a very specific port that only HDMI sets have.

The difference between HDMI and component in terms of quality at 720p is something I cant even notice.

HDMI has better image quality than component, but the extra cost is going to do you no good.  Your screen is too small to see the difference.  You don't have a surround sound system that can take advantage of any of its sound capabilities.  It's used mostly to restrict 1080p movies right now so that they can't be captured and pirated.  If you had a blu ray/hd dvd player, it would make sense.  The fact that you're saying you want it mostly for gaming just goes even further to prove you don't need it.

look past the hdmi because it's pretty much worthless to you.

And on the specs of a tv, it will say what it can accept as inputs.  Some older CRT's can't accept 720p because it would require extra circuitry IIRC.  But pretty much any modern hdtv can.

The difference in video quality between component and HDMI is as apparent to me as the difference between Component and S-Video was. I really just run HDMI cause it keeps things clean behind the entertainment center, and I have a pretty nice tv.

So if HDMI is worthless to me right now, will the Elite come with component as well? Or is it HDMI only? How much do 360 component cables cost? I didn't say I'd get that 23 inch. ;) I may bump it up to 27 or 32.

I basically want an hdmi ready tv for the future when I DO get blu ray or hddvd player.

Elite will most likely come with just component.  MS is cheap that way.  It's definitely not HDMI only.

And as far as being future proof with HDMI, it will still be worthless baby.  your tv is not 1080p so you still wouldn't be able to watch Blu Ray and HD DVD at their native resolutions (which is the only HDMI on those players are good for basically).  Save HDMI for your next TV and for when it is more established and useful

And if you're not a big videophile, you probably won't see a damn difference between HDMI and component.

How much do the tvs that have both 720 and 1080 cost
depends on brand/size/features etc.

Just do some shopping and don't make HDMI a must.  It really IS worthless to you.  HDMI is worthless for a budget home entertainment system.  I honestly can't tell a difference when I switch out HDMI and component on my tv.

Just look around.  And for god's sake, consider CRT's for the black levels if nothing else.
