Kevin Smith has revealed the details on his next film which is a slasher/thriller. He says it will be called "Red State" and be about a crazy right-wing Christian who hates gays and goes on a murdering spree. He said the character is based partially on the extremist Baptist minister Fred Phelps(I think Phelps is isn't right-wing but hey kevin smith is making it about a right-winger so oh well). It's basically a "conservative exploitation" movie.

I saw some of it on Comedy Central. I'm sure it was edited out the wazoo but there was one part that really made me laugh. Basically Damon and Affleck were on a bus and these two people were kissing. Damon asked them if they were married, and the dude said no; so Damon went on this huge religo-rant and proceded to kill them. Same thing happened in another scene where this company made this golden statue of some cartoon character and they killed everyone in the board room

Chasing Amy was abysmal.  Not only did Silent Bob deliver a longwinded deus ex machina, but it was one of the dumbest in film history.  The movie has some funny Smith moments, but they are relegated to the first 20 or so minutes, after which it is SERIOUS BUSINESS.

That wasn't him stretching his talents, that was just him trying to make an easy buck by pandering. 

I think the idea was to make a "critic-proof" schlocky romantic comedy starring (even if only in the first twenty minutes) the "hot" couple of the moment.  It backfired horribly...I remember him talking in interviews saying how he was done with Jay & Silent Bob and the whole New Jersey Askewniverse series of films.

TVC nailed it when he talked about the "deus ex machina" in that particular movie.  Smith doesn't know how to resolve conflict so that's what he does, he brings in an outside character to explain things to the protagonist and bring about some sort of resolution.  He's done it in Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Jersey Girl, Mallrats...every movie he's ever done.

Kevin Smith loved the controversy of Dogma and he even protested the movie with a sign with some church group who didn't know who he was. He seems HOPEFUL that it will stir up controversy.
