lttp~FF3 DS
« on: April 08, 2007, 10:33:58 PM »
I wrote this off as shit after looking at a few screens and reading a review when it came out. It didn't help that I loathed the original Final Fantasy III on NES. However, my friend had it, and I ended up starting a new game. Better than I thought. I like the complete 3D makeover -- that and the music (in some parts) almost puts me in mind of Final Fantasy 7. I'll probably borrow it and play it through. I played all the way up to when you get the airship and stopped. My one complaint is the battles are really slow. Hopefully that list doesn't grow as I play more.

Honestly though I never heard much about this one. What'd everyone think? Good? Bad? Mixed feelings?

It's really archaic, I'm at the Gold Mansion and... I dunno what to do in it.

The battles are really monotonous, and the classes seem really useless. Why would I want to be a Viking? Or a Dragoon? I am doing just fine with a Red Mage / Black Mage / White Mage / Knight (upgraded Fighter).

I usually fire it up, do like one battle and just get bored of it. I'll finish it... eventually.

Right now I've been playing Pokemon Fire Red instead in preparation for Diamond.

You are really better off playing the SNES ports.

I'm debating whether to start this, FFV Advance, or Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation.

Which one should I start next?  Help me out you guys.

I've played FF6A twice now. Once for completion and once for an LLG. I'm keeping my eye out for V, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm weary about the lag in IV. The little time I spent with it was frustrating.

V is hard to find? I find that hard to believe. Just order it online. I need to pick up VI, I have to this date never finished that game, or V for that matter.

Gamestop/EB don't stock it anymore, and neither does BestBuy. I occasionally check at a Wal-Mart down the street, but I will probably just end up ordering it off Amazon or something. And dude, you really need to finish VI. My favorite game of all time, even if it is probably due to nostalgia.

The PSX FFIV port was great - the US version, anyway.  I hear the jp version has tons of loading but the US version plays like the cartridge version for some reason.

Does the GBA version of FFIV add anything that would make it worth a re-purchase?

Also, I decided to start with Super Robot Taisen just 'cause I already have played straight through three regular RPGs.  Time for a change.

Im playing through FFIII DS at the moment, and I think Im enjoying it. Yeah the battles are pretty monotonous, but they are easy so it makes for good grinder while commuting IMO. Im about 5 hours in and im trying to get these ice horns for the stupid dwarves: 'Lali Ho! Were a bit little, but were in big trouble!' assholes lol. The Gutsco the Rougue guy is 100% naked and gray and disgusting. Im playing through FFXII also at the moment and FFIII is probably better :/

Oh and Baten Kaitos Origins shits all over both these games so play that if you havent already

IV GBA has a bonus dungeon.

Bonus dungeons feel like such a ripoff.  Just add a few tiles and voila! Extra content.

I like it quite a bit. Right now I'm pretty much at the end with a Knight, Summoner, Devout, and Black Belt party. I spent too much time leveling and trying out different classes so the characters are all maxed out making the game a cake walk difficulty wise.

Ugh, is it true you suffer a temporary penalty every time you change jobs? And can you keep the skills you learn in one job, change, and later change back and still have those skills? I doubt the last part, but that would really suck.

You do get a slight penalty that goes away after so many battles, it's nothing major.

You can keep your skills for that job, it's all dependant on job level.

I dont think you learn skills in the job system of FF3, the job system in the game is really basic. the job system in FF3 unlike FF5 is not for building up your party, it's more like "hey in this dungeon the enemies multiply everytime I kill one and a black knight has a skill that can hit every enemy...."

what Im trying to say is that in FF3 you use the job system to get past the obstacles, instead of being a system to build up your party like it is in FF5.

I really enjoyed the game, but then again I really like old school rpgs.

I have the PS version of FFV and I thought it was extremely boring.  Beat X-Death on his palace (on the second planet) and then stopped playing.

The new translation and lack of load times makes the GBA version a *FAR* more enjoyable port of FF5... even though some of the music is *slightly* off (then again, no where near as bad as FF6's...), its the definitive version of FF5, even outclassing the SFC original. I've beaten this game 4 or 5 or so times, each time discovering new strategies against the bosses and trying out new job combos, it's so addicting.

You don't get stat bonuses and such for 2 to 8 battles after changing a class but just go kill a few minor enemies and you're back. The only downer part is you don't get MP when you change classes until you rest so you can't go from a dark knight to a black mage or something on a whim and expect to have a full load of spells. There's only a couple situations where you need to have a particular class and they give you ample warning so it more boils down to which one you like staring out the most for hours on end.
