I bought Firefly Season 1 at Target yesterday, it was on sale for $20. I purchased it purely on word of mouth, I hope it is good.

I love this show. You'll enjoy Serenity without having seen Firefly. I hadn't seen it yet and loved it.

You won't enjoy it nearly as much I think but it should still be fun. Firefly seems to be the only modern-day "light" swashbuckling space opera since Star Wars. I wonder why that niche of sci-fi never grew much.
