I agree. All my friends with kids are getting back thousands of dollars in returns and buying gawdy crap. Although for all the headache a kid is a tax credit isn't really worth it.

Man, that sucked. I thought I was getting a phatty few-k refund...then I fixed my math and instead I'm getting $27 refund. And I have to paper file because I have foreign income so it'll take 8-10 weeks to get that $27.

Put in perspective...I can buy Titan Quest, but not the expansion. : (

People always act like their refunds are a lotto prize or something.....but the only reason you're getting so much is because too much was withheld from you in the first place.  At the end of the day, you've lost because you could have had that money much earlier.

At least that's what I said to cheer myself up when I realized I was getting no refund and actually owed $13.  :\

I'd rather overpay and get the lotto, honestly.  It feels like found money.  I feel lame for all of my friends that do freelance stuff and have to do their own taxes 100%.  Not getting a refund takes out the only redeeming aspect of the spinning hell it is to do taxes.

If it's punishment for being single, how do you explain the marriage penalty? You could have two people file jointly and get much less money back than if they had filed seperately. That's a croc of shit.

Most of the marriage penalty stuff went the way of the dodo in the late 1990s.

Kids are one thing to reduce the amount of taxes you pay. The big thing for most people is home ownership. There's a huge difference between not really having the deductions to beat the standard deduction because you aren't paying a mortgage, and going WAY over the standard deduction due to being able to deduct mortgage interest/property taxes.

I actually have a few allowances made on my W-4 to reduce the amount of money that is withheld (don't like giving the government a free loan) and I still came up a couple of grand ahead-and this is with no kids.
