Shadow of the Collossus
« on: April 11, 2007, 09:55:44 PM »
My local EB is selling this for 30NZD ($17 US), is it worth it?

I thought Ico was one of the shittiest sub-PS1 3d platformer shit turds I had ever played (I still love lol'ing at fegs on GAF/Gamefaqs that still think its some sort of unknown arthouse sleeper hit), but I actually quite like the idea of fighting big baddies while riding a horse.

it's a decent game.

I didn't like how the game recycles some of the colossi, that was very lame.

:-\ ugh I hate recycled bosses. Metriodvanias are the only games where this isnt a major issue for me. Was probably the only negative aspect of DK: Jungle Beat

The game never recycles bosses.

I like the game a lot.

And Ico was a platformer? It's an action adventure.

Just buy it.  It's an amazingly large world with great bosses.

It had sorta platformy elements, but basically I was just saying it played worse than a PS1 platformer, which generally play pretty badly.

OT: Does anyone remember Jersey Devil?(PS1 Platformer) I remember it being a great game when I was 12 but I havent played it for yonks.

Worse than a psx platformer is reaching. Ico may be an overrated mess by the masses who play 3 games a year, but it's still better than the likes of Croc and other psx platformers.

The game never recycles bosses.
of course it does, it's the same basic model with a different gimmick.

I'm a big fan of Ico

I didn't like SoTC as much.  While climbing on the back of giants and taking them down is cool, doing nothing but that gets repeatitive.  The only thing inbetween is a huge empty wasteland.  the game needed something more than just boss fights.

Sums up my thoughts pretty well... not to mention that SotC was much too ambitious for the hardware, so even though the graphics and the atmosphere is very nice, you'll see framerate drops, shitty camera angles, blatant mipmapping, lots of areas with nothing but empty space, etc.

Same basic model? You mean the design of the bosses in the way they look? If you mean slash their weakspot until they succumb, that is how you beat them, but it's how you get to the weakspot that makes them fun and strategic.

Because you kill all of the bosses with a stab to their weakspot is irrelevant, because they all have different behaviors, patterns, and strategy.

The gameplay is pretty meh, but it just has ultra slick production values.

I felled my first three colossi tonight. They were pissing me off, and it was kind of cathartic stabbing into their weak spots. I always feel kind of bad when I kill one for some reason, probably the music. But fuck them, they shouldn't be stomping on me.

I just killed my fifth colossus, a huge fucking bird. That battle was fun.

Does killing the lizards and eating their tails do anything? I've done that to about ten lizards but I'm not noticing anything like when I eat fruit and it extends my life bar by a millimiter.

I just beat it last night. The final Colossus was a pain in the ass thanks to shitty camera angles bouncing all over the place.

It was a pretty good game though.
