i am a beer and liquor man, and always have been since i was 15. now that i am older and less of a drunk, i wish to expand my palate to include wine. i am drinking a pinot grigio and it isn't bad at all. recommend me something good that doesn't come in a box! also -- and i know this makes me a fagazor to the wine set -- but i like whites and not reds, because reds taste like cat piss and vinegar mixed in a rotting tree stump. help!

I like a good pinot noir, and a good cabernet sauvignon. You don't have to spend a lot to get a decent bottle of wine- $15 will get you something good. However, if you do develop a taste for it you WILL know where the extra money goes to if you start drinking the more expensive stuff.

Try a Gewurtzaminer drinky. Its a white wine and very good with poltry or spicey dishes. The flavor of the wine is determined by the Zen grape. Young Zen grapes give off a very harsh note but its better for certain dishes while a older Zen grape can almost be used as a desert wine its very sweet and dry on the tongue. You'll notice notes of fruit and maybe some wood notes as well.

i don't like sweet. i do like dry. chardonnays are alright. this grigio is decent. i hate rieslings, zinfandels, and muscats. i'd like reds if they didn't taste so damn vinegar-y.

Hmm you like dry well try it. Its dry enough if you ask me. But thats dependent on which maker you get it from. I like the Casa De Fruita 01' but it was hard to track down. They only carry 04' i think now.

I'm a big fan of Shiraz and the Cab-Shiraz mix...

I used to have family friends who owned a tiny vineyard in the hills outside Yakima, we would go over every summer/fall to help pick grapes and make wine (red and white). It was a lot of fun, we ate like kings and always ended up with numerous cases of wine to last us the year. They've since moved down to Bend, OR, but he's now the brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery, so getting tons of Mirror Pond for free is a nice trade off.

Yeah Id like to think of myself as a wine drinker/foodie that sort of knows his stuff.

Nothing beats a rich plummy Pinot Noir, or an Aussie Shiraz. A good Chardonnay is off the chain also. There is absolutely no reason to fuck around with Merlot, Cab-Sav or Pinot Gris.

Pinot Gris is pretty much the cream of the crap when it comes to Varietals (spicy, flowery wine) Youd be much better off with a Riesling or Gewurtztraminer
