How do you focus on something you don't want to do?
« on: April 12, 2007, 01:57:59 AM »
I've been lurking around for a bit but decided to make my 1st post because I've been feeling a little depressed the last couple of days.  I'm a 1st year medical student and I have a big test next monday.  There's a whole shitload of stuff that I still haven't studied.  I know the test is coming up yet I still haven't really tried to study for it because I don't really want to face it.  I keep messing around on the net as stress relief even though I should be studying.  What would you guys do in this situation?  Any of you have some good cramming tips?  I hope you guys don't think this is too weird for a 1st post.  Based on what I know of you guys, I expect most of you to make fun of me or my situation but that's okay.  I don't mind having some laughs right now.

I have the same problem, but with papers.

With exams I suggest you go to a place where you can't help but study; like a library. Mine's full of drunken Frenchmen and Atlantic whores! Drink plenty of energy drinks. Do jumping jacks when studying at home.

crap I'm really drunk...

if studying at home, turn off the fuckin PC, UNPLUG IT. Also listen to Bach, I find it helps sometimes,

There is no definite answer, this is one of those times where you're just gonna have to suck it up and take it bit by bit.

Try and study the stuff that seems easier to memorize.

You just kinda do it. Things generally become more of a problem by putting them off, so 'sucking it up' as demi put it is kinda required. Even moreso as an adult.

That's what I'm trying to do.  There's about 2-3 questions/lecture but not all lectures are equal in difficulty.  Some lectures require knowing at least 50 different items and I don't think I'll have time for those.  It'll mess me up for the medical boards but I'll have to cover the material at a later time.  The important thing for me is to pass this test right now.  Also, I have a hard time studying/memorizing when I'm nervous, like right now.  Are there any drinks or foods that can help to calm my nerves?  Better sleep would also help because I've been so restless.

You gotta disconnect the internet. This thing is a killer of time.

Take a shot of some liquor. Just one. Feel the warmth going down your throat. Mmm. Nice and calm.

When is the test? You should try and get a nice amount of rest then go at the books for a little bit. Take a walk, and try and talk to yourself about what you just read and see if it sticks. I find that if I hear or say the same thing a lot it sticks more.

Test is on monday.  Hopefully, 4 days would be enough to cram enough for a pass.  I'm going to try to get some good rest tonight and cram like crazy tomorrow.  I'll try the liquor stuff tonight.  Hopefully, it'll help.  The self repeating seems helpful too.  Thanks.

After you bomb out of med school and work part time at olive garden washing dishes you'll have tons of time for playing on the internet.

Well I have taken it, and I'm not fond of the side effects. Mainly the loss of appetite.
