I just got in trouble with a (former?) friend because one of her friends called her and told her "Ichirou called me and spent about an hour just bitching about you." Now, while it's true I called her...2 weeks ago...and while it's true I talked to her about my friend, I only spent about 5 minutes talking about my friend and I wouldn't qualify it as bitching. I merely stated that my friend seemed angry at me and I was wondering if she knew why. The rest of the conversation was spent talking about work, school, the teachers we worked with (since one of the teachers at her school had gotten transferred to mine and vice versa), lesson plans for English classes, our expectations for the new school year, etc., etc.

Why would this person intentionally cause trouble for me by misrepresenting the conversation? What does she gain by it? Nothing except the joy that comes from spreading innuendo and gossip.

People suck.

It's not just women. Guys love to do that shit too. I don't fucking get it. The letter my friend sent me about the whole incident was REALLY nasty, too. I think this friendship's over, and all because some girl basically decided to lie about the content of a conversation. Gossip sucks.

It's not just women, guys do it too. There's some guy at my friend's office who apparently gets a lot of text messages from an unattractive girl who likes him, and he forwards the messages to all the people in the office so they can all laugh at the unattractive girl. Lame.

In our ancestral past gossiping was a means of sharing vital information, such as wear predators lurked or what alliances were being built up in the tribe. Those who were able to gossip well likely had an increased chance at survival and reproduction. Thus evolution positively selected for traits that would make us gossip.
