Cell is over-engineered. It's being used in servers at the moment, and I'd imagine if they were really as revolutionary as once claimed, there'd be news stories on techie sites about how Sony has revitalized the server market.
Yeah fuckin' right.
What? Have you seen anyone harping over how great the Cell servers are? They've been on the market for a couple months now.
You're expecting too much out of Sony. Cell is not as groundbreaking as they claim it is, but in terms of graphics processing, it's sure as hell going to bring out more potential in itself and the RSX than a high-end nVidia PCI-X card would by itself.
I think that remains to be seen. Also, you said potential in reference to Cell. You pay for that potential, Diablos!
You're always paying for potential with a game console. You are with the 360, as it will improve over time. If I buy a PS3, I am too. We're all buying into the potential of the console, hoping things get better as time goes on. And they will, for both.
Sony of course went off the deep end by marketing POTENTIAL more than other things at times, yes.
I'm not kissing Sony's ass here. Looking back, I think a. Sony should have played their cards differently especially if they knew Cell alone wouldn't do what they wanted (hence being the reason why RSX was added, driving up the cost), and b. should have stopped being so damn stubborn about the format war and just used HD-DVD.
That said, I think it's a bit ridiculous to compare RSX to a PCI-X nVidia card when it's being used in a
completely different architecture. Cell isn't the second coming of processing, but it's definitely going to help PS3 in the long run.
As for other things Cell can be used for? That's entirely different, dude.
