I would love to see Sony fall off, after years of empty promises and smoke-and-mirrors acts.

Seriously, I love some of their exclusive titles but I don't want to support such a lame, money grubbing bunch of fuckers. I'll take my pick with the X360 or Wii, thanks a bunch.  :tomato

It would be fun to see the PS3 fail just to see Sonybots get owned.

But as long as the PS3 offers great games, like the PS2 and PS1, it should be fine. Although I really think the 360 could possibly pull a coop. Games like Dead Rising, Gears of War, and Lost Planet all look like the next big things.

I doubt Sony is going to have as big an era with the PS3 as they did with the PS2, now that most people either a) don't give a shit about Blu-Ray, b) won't pay $600 for a console, or c) don't think the games showed off so far have been worthy of their time and money. Given that many hardcore gamers are now turning in their sony coats and waiting for price drops, the PS3 might not even begin to be a "big thing" until two or three years from now, giving the competition a nice piece of the marketplace.

Ask most "mainstream" gamers what they'll be pulling for this gen, and you'll either hear "the 360" or "the PS3, maybe in a year or two when I can afford one." Poor Sony.  :-[

Well, Sony CAN'T fall off in Japan unless Nintendo steamrolls them.  Japan, being the most racist country in the world, wouldn't put a foreign company's product in front of their precious Sony.

Japan may keep the Playstation team afloat, but without a major retooling the PS3 could end up this gen's Gamecube. As in, still there, but you don't really want to look at it or concern yourself with it.  :-X

You know, Japan is very important when it comes to selling hardware.

Ps2 total HW sales in Japan: ~22mln units, plus counting
Xbox worldwide total HW sales: ~25mln units

As you can see Sony has a huge advantage thanks to Japan. You can't become #1 without Japanese support. Sony must like really flop in both North America and Europe to become last, or even second. But I don't think they'll flop. The Ps3 will sell like crazy after a few pricedrops.

I'm sure they got that number by people rebuying the same system.

But therein lies the problem: the PS2 was priced reasonably, and had the support going in from not only the hardcore Sony set, but a large chunk of mainstream audiences as well. The PS3 doesnt seem to have this luxury, which can end up putting a damper on the system when compared to its former counterpart.

IMO, the PS3 <<< PS2 for Sony when all is said and done, unless they can clean up their act without having to lower the price by a few hundred first.

Sony is in a financially very precarious position right now.  They can't afford for it to sell well after a few price drops.  They need it to sell consistently well right out of the gates.  Sony is pretty much betting the bank on PS3/home entertainment.

The pricing is really bad, I know. It's just terrible. That's too much for a gaming console. Can be arrogance or a marketing technique...

I think Sony wants to establish the Ps3 as a high profile product. Only for the higher classes. Just like Ipod. They want to give it a high profile image. The first buyers are always rich people, early adopters and fans. They WILL buy the Ps3, and the Ps3 will sell out for a long time thanks to them. The casuals will come later after the pricedrop.

Casuals do want a Ps3. They really will. But it's too expensive for them. They'll wait for a pricedrop, or even two.

And it doesn't mean that the casuals will buy a Wii or a X360 in the meantime. People will see the Ps3 price and they'll immediately think: "Hmm, Ps3 is more expensive than X360. So it's more powerful. I'll wait for that." And people will think that.

I might not know what every casual wants, but after e3 I know three different "mainstream" gamers that took their PS3 pre-order cash and bought a 360, and a few Sony elite who plan on waiting until the PS3 is down to at least $400 before taking the plunge. If Sony is fine doing this kind of business, then I wish them the best of luck and hope that they're still welcomed back in Japan.  :P

but the reason it's so expensive is obviously since of the gargantuesque costs of Sony's R&D for all the key components, many being basically totally new to the market

as time will pass Sony will greatly lower these costs, optimize the conception of components and better its yields, which will leave plenty of margins for eventual discounts

Honestly, duders, Sony could sell the PS2 with a "PS3" logo on it and I bet it'd sell better at $300 than the real PS3, with all its high-tech machinery, will at $600. Its not about the tech, its about the games, and once Sony realizes this the better off they'll be.

You know...if the Ps3 was $400 @ launch...just imagine the shortages. It would be ridiculous.

The $500/$600 pricetag really keeps the "not now needed" consumers away. They'll buy it later.

They should charge $1000 for the PS3 in order to cover R&D costs; I mean people will buy them from ebay at that price anyways, why not just cut out the middleman?  I can only see positives from this approach, and absolutely no negatives whatsoever.

Sadly, I think Sony justified their distinguished mentally-challenged price point by looking at the 360s getting resold on ebay.

Hardcore demographic never makes any system a winner.  Remember how the GameCube fared better at launch than Xbox - whoops!

The gap in sales between Xbox and Cube isn't that huge.

Xbox sold approx 24mln units worldwide, while the Cube did approx 20million. Only a 4mln units gap.

But the Japanese support -of the lack of it- really hurt the Xbox sales.
