FBI: Fugitive polygamist arrested near Las Vegas
POSTED: 12:55 p.m. EDT, August 29, 2006

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- A polygamist sect leader who was on the FBI's Most Wanted List has been arrested and faces sexual misconduct charges for allegedly arranging marriages between underage girls and older men, authorities said Tuesday.

Warren Steed Jeffs, 50, was taken into custody after he and two other people were pulled over late Monday by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 15 just north of Las Vegas, FBI spokesman David Staretz said.

The leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was wanted in Utah and Arizona on suspicion of sexual misconduct for allegedly arranging marriages between underage girls and older men. (Watch what led a trooper to find Jeffs -- 2:02)

Since May, Jeffs has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, with a $100,000 reward offered for information leading to his capture.

The other two people in the vehicle were identified as one of Warren Jeffs' wives, Naomi Jeffs, and a brother, Isaac Steve Jeffs, both 32, Staretz said. They were being interviewed by the FBI in Las Vegas but were not arrested.

Jeffs was in federal custody in Las Vegas pending a court hearing on a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, Staretz said. It was not immediately clear if Jeffs would face extradition to Arizona or Utah.

Jeffs was indicted in June on an Arizona charge of arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and a married man, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He is charged in Utah with two felony counts of rape as an accomplice, for allegedly arranging the marriage of a teenage girl to an older man in Nevada.

The mainstream Mormon Church disavowed plural marriage more than 100 years ago.

Its funny, there's currently a rift growing in the Mormon religion between two large hotspots.

Mesa Arizona
Most of the mormons here dont practice in 'the old ways' and follow a much more realistic path through life and their religion.

Salt Lake City Utah
Insane conservative mormans that want to stick to the old ways, which are very scary.

Granted, many from Mesa make the trip to Salt Lake City for various reasons because its their holy city of sorts, but the two sides dont really get along too well.

Well most of my family converted to mormonism, I had to attend the church as 'a guest' for three years. In Arizona at least there wasnt any discrimination in the public face of it.

The entire religion is based around this support system. The mormons run a 'good will' store chain called umm Deseret Industries or something. Anyway generally families that arent living it large are enticed by the support network of the Mormon church. However once IN the church there are tithes that are pretty much required, lots of attendance of meetings in such, things like that.

Its sorta like the Mafia. I remember the youth group used to track me down and ask me why I had been skipping the gatherings. It was really creepy.

HOWEVER, I dont doubt there are good Mormons out there, but the foundation of their religion breeds a lot of wackos.

So the church in Arizona doesn't approve of multiple spouses?

The modern LDS church turned its back on multiple wives a long time ago, but a lot of mormons still practice it.  It's kind of like Hitler saying he loves Jews to the media, but then killed a bunch behind closed doors.

The churches in Arizona are very different, its really weird. They tend to be very moderate in their religious practices and a pretty normal bunch. Admittedly the fact that my mother and I were not allowed to see my sister get married in the 'temple' because we weren't mormon was the biggest slap in the face ever.

But is it actually in the Mormon doctrine? Or was this something Smith just did on the side and claimed to be of God?

This is the best book on the Mormon faith available (especially in terms of fundamentalism), in terms of history and understanding, written by a fucking great author by the name of Jon Krakauer...

Speaking of which, Hitler was retroactively baptized by the Mormons.

Plural Marriage was officially killed in the late 19th century by someone that wasn't Joseph Smith or Brigham young, and it just so happened that the declaration happened right when the US guv'ment was putting a lot of pressure on the church to end the practice.  It doesn't take much of a stretch to see why it's still practiced today.
