it's 22 dead, and 21 injured.

I think somebody said he was an asian white supremacist.

they say that either there were two shooters or they didn't catch him the first time and he went to the other side of the campus to a classroom and shot again.

Okay, makaveli can go home now.

This is just a weird thing.  I lived in Montgomery County, MD for most of my life, so V.T. is one of those campuses that a lot of my local friends from high school went to.  One of 'em has checked in (an ex, no less) to say she's okay, but I haven't heard anything else.  I'm sure everyone is fine, but in terms of campuses where you'd think this would happen, V.T. doesn't strike me as one.

It's understandable.

Virginia is a growing commonwealth that caters to politicians that make their homes in that state while traveling to D.C. for work, and it has a huge, booming private business sector.  It's home to a lot of big businesses too.  If you're thinking rednecks - you're thinking wrong (that's more a West Virginia thing).

And although Virginia Tech is near Blacksburg, which is nowhere near the D.C. metropolitan area, I've never heard anything horrible to come out of there (other than Marcus Vick).

This made me curious about the University of Texas sniper, so I read up on the event at wikipedia. I think I found out why more people died in today's events than at Ut in 1966

Once Whitman began facing return gunfire from the authorities, he used the waterspouts on each side of the tower as turrets, which allowed him to continue shooting while largely protected from the gunfire below, which had grown to include civilians who had brought out their personal firearms to assist police.

they don't allow guns on that campus.

the shooter chained the doors to the main engineering hall closed and methodically proceeded from one classroom to another.

one guy closed the door shut when the shooter left the class for a second and kept it closed as the shooter shot through the door and then helped stop the bleeding of the people he shot before he left.  most people couldn't do that and that's why you see 20-30 dead.

actually they do allowed concealed guns on campus if you have a permit.

Not at VT.

Quote
Gun bill gets shot down by panel
HB 1572, which would have allowed handguns on college campuses, died in subcommittee.

By Greg Esposito
381-1675

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill's defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

Del. Dave Nutter, R-Christiansburg, would not comment Monday because he was not part of the subcommittee that discussed the bill.

Most universities in Virginia require students and employees, other than police, to check their guns with police or campus security upon entering campus. The legislation was designed to prohibit public universities from making "rules or regulations limiting or abridging the ability of a student who possesses a valid concealed handgun permit ... from lawfully carrying a concealed handgun."

The legislation allowed for exceptions for participants in athletic events, storage of guns in residence halls and military training programs.

Last spring a Virginia Tech student was disciplined for bringing a handgun to class, despite having a concealed handgun permit. Some gun owners questioned the university's authority, while the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police came out against the presence of guns on campus.

In June, Tech's governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities.

They showed a clip of DOOM on ABC News when talking about it.

They were talking about the history of mass shootings in the US, and how groups had tried to link violent video games and films to the Columbine incident. They were NOT suggesting a link between today's event and games.

During my sophomore year of college (Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA), we had a guy come onto campus and kill one of our professors and then himself right in front of my dorm as I was coming back from class. While these two incidents were on very different scales, it's still frightening to think that people can do such terrible things. My thoughts and prayers are with those at VT and their family and friends.
