You know what PD doesn't understand?  FDR's presidency.  HE'S OVERRATED!!!!!!

He is. People should give him credit for keeping the country together, winning the war, and putting us on the road to economic recovery (although no, the New Deal did not end the Great Depression).

Yes, ANYONE could've done that, right?

I'm sorry that civil rights took a back seat to the depression and world war 2, PD.  I don't know if you ever learned about those.  You see, the civilized world was kind of on the brink of total collapse.

I don't mean to make it sound like anyone could do this. Jimmy Carter certainly couldn't

But in terms of my least favorite presidents everyone likes, FDR is #1, followed by JKF

Keeping the country together and winning WWII is the reason he is put alongside Lincoln and Washington but you seem to act like that isn't a big deal.

As president rather over-rated. But that should not take away from the fact he avoided WWIII with sheer brilliance, most presidents would have gone to war(yet he helped kind of start the crisis so it is somewhat negated).

But he is such a iconic individual who just oozes charisma it is near impossible for even the most straight male to not swoon over him.

I find him so unimpressive I mispelled his name - my bad.

If anything he makes me even more upset LBJ was such a fuckup with Vietnam. One could argue that outside of Vietnam, LBJ>JFK. Cheebs seems to believe this as well. JFK gets so much credit for the stuff LBJ actually did in terms of social policy and civil rights

Even with my love of JFK it truely hurts me that LBJ's social moves are ignored due to Vietnam and pushed into Kennedy's lap.

He did so much to get that through. And he ended up making the Democrats DEAD in the south, a stigma that still is there to this day. But it was worth it.

But he lost "us" Texas!

I saw a doc on LBJ a few months ago on the history channel. They said before he died he went to a black family's house and saw a picture of JFK in their house, a sight often seen in black familys after the civil rights bill and they said those close to him said it hurt him deeply for the rest of his life. :(

History is a pretty good, slack undergraduate degree to get.  You can learn a lot that will help you in graduate school.  One of my good friends got his undergraduate in history and engineering, masters in history and then went to law school.  I'm pretty much probably gonna follow that path, minus the engineering and bothering to get a masters.

It'd be nice to get my BA in History and be done with it, but seeing as how that's not very useful, I unfortunately have to go all the way (or at least with a Master's) to be a college instructor. :-\

But hey, I like teaching, and history was always an interesting subject, so I don't mind too much. The other reason is that I've heard most game designers are had degrees in history, which sorta makes sense since it would be useful to know some shit that you could tie in with the games you're working on. Yeah, yeah, the odds of getting such a job are pretty rare, but that's why I have a backup plan.

I don't think Reagan was a very bad president at all. . .and neither do any of the presidents that followed him, since regardless of party, they've been very Ronnie-esque when it comes to policy in one way or another.  Sure, he could be a cutthroat bastard at times, but Reagan had one of the best scriptwriting teams behind him.  He restored a sort of dignity to the presidency after the decade of presidential slapassery that preceded him.

I won't say he's a saint, or that he was the best president ever, but we really could've done a lot worse.

I don't know much of anything about Reagan, other than he sold tow missles to Iran, escalated Nixon's war on drugs, used to be a movie star I guess, and started the whole, let's talk to Americans like children thing. Almost all the president's do this thing now where it's like they're sitting you down for a talk and he's your dad.

...or not, I donno. It's just something that annoys me.

Blacks started shifting party allegiance from the GOP to the Democratic Party during the 1930's, and blacks in America have a pretty good track record of sussing out who's trying to screw them over and who isn't.  (Wisdom of crowds, lol)

Interesting note: my grandad fought in WWII, and he said that when it was announced that FDR had passed allthe black soldiers around him began crying. The thing I found interesting is that he remembered being the only black solidier in his regiment who was originally from the south. I don't know about the level of political awareness among blacks at that time, but I'm willing to bet that if you were a black sharecropper (and many were at that time) in 1935 you certainly weren't happy with FDR.

This may your almost unheard of lack of love for FDR. He did a lot for the "white community" and kept them very happy. Basically everyone here is white, but still as you said most cried.

EVERYONE seemed to love FDR when he was president. My great-grandfather (both grandfathers fought in Korean war, far too young to fight in WWII) fought in WWII. But he was a racist and sexist dixie-crat from Texas.

Yeah, that's just for a large single store, too.  I probably could be managing multiple units for somewhere in the mid 40s, but it's soooo not worth it.  Anytime anything goes wrong at like 5 stores, you get a call.  Anytime someone has a bitchy customer, you get a call.  And you have to work like 60 hours a week.  Totally not worth it.

Yeah, I know a few people who moved up the chain to become regional retail or restaurant managers.  Good money and benefits, but none of them were close to happy or content with the actual work itself.  Most of them have quit to take lower-paying jobs that don't make them (as) miserable.

Dick.  I was pointing out that one can make a semi-decent wage without having a degree.  I still plan on getting one.

And don't denigrate retail- sure it sucks, but with America moving towards a service oriented economy, retail will just keep getting bigger.  At least until the water and gas riots start!

Dude, I could totally be making in the mid to upper 30s if I didn't fucking hate retail.  Not that it's a good field or anything, but that's certainly decent money for someone who has no debt or car payment.

Wow, upper 30s, eh? I take it back then.
I sense a lot of sarcasm in this post :rofl :rofl :rofl

Dick.  I was pointing out that one can make a semi-decent wage without having a degree.  I still plan on getting one.

And don't denigrate retail- sure it sucks, but with America moving towards a service oriented economy, retail will just keep getting bigger.  At least until the water and gas riots start!

Most definitely. In fact, one could sometimes make even more than one with a college degree. But of course, the drawback is that you'd be miserable since you'd be doing stuff that hardly anybody else wants. I do customer service, and the pay is decent, but I'd easily take a few dollars demotion to work in something that doesn't involve people constantly yelling at me.

Triumph, I'm actually quite surprised you didn't finish college. I always assumed you did man. Goes to show that college (or school in general) means jack shit when pin pointing one's intelligence. I mean look at PD.

Yeah, but his case certainly isn't encouraging for one's prospects for employment-related success without a college degree :P
