My previous employer made good and sent me a W4 and independent contractor agreement.  I will be working as a contract designer for them and will be paid more than I made when I was working for them full-time.  I'll be doing product packaging, so nothing exciting, but I am hoping this will turn into more contract work.

But in an effort to raise emergency funds needed to continue my higher education, I begrudgingly accepted a retail gig to for a retail outlet that will remain anonymous.  I was brought on as an Assistant Manager, which is nice, because that means that a lot of people don't yell at me - just one.

Is your title abbreviated as ASM on all of the documents?

Thankfully, it is not Target.  And I'm not kidding, because Disposable White Guy talked about that option.  That was like my last resort, as I've put in almost three years of service there when I was in high school to freshman year.  Never again.

Also, Target has a shitty discount (10%).

Damn, remind me to never work there.

Then again, I'm working at GameStop over the summer AGAIN, so I don't have too much room to talk.

you two should try working at a movie theater. Its awesome job and fun.

Two problems with this:

1. I hate my movie theatre (more than GAFfers hate GameStop) because they dont' fucking clean regularly and provide a poor viewing environment
2. The other people who work there are dumb ass bitch high schoolers. The same ones who openly discouraged people from watching Children of Men WITHOUT VIEWING THE FILM.

So fuck that shit.

I don't know, I heard that GameStop employees can get up to 25% off on used games (15% on new), and they apparently get 30% off on Barnes & Nobles.  Not bad.  I should think about applying there.

Movie theatre chains pay truly like crap and they're not much fun to work at.  The biggest one near me is a shithole too.  I'd rather work in a new GameStop in a strip mall in NoCal, schlepping games for slave wages.

B&N discount is only 15% but its stackable with the yearly discount i thought willco?

I love the theater company here in town they have hs's doing the easy stuff. But i work the projectors, cans, and vaults. So i screen movies make sure things go great and put the films in the vaults for playback. Computers turn everything else on and runs it auto for the most part.

Great place though better than retail.

I'm walking in your Gamestop and throwing down the magazine racks.

I will, pretty much.  My folks are going to have to help finance some loans, but I don't qualify for a Pell Grant and since I'm not enrolled, there's a lot of stuff I'm not eligible for (need to be enrolled, have a decent GPA, etc.).

No, the B&N discount is 30%.  I know this from my girlfriend's sister, who is also an ASM in another district.

The goal is to work this awful retail gig and do freelance contract work at the same and go to school full-time.  And not sleep.

The Art Institute of California - San Francisco has offered to let me use their services to find a job in my career field once I'm enrolled, though.  And due to my work history in the field, I will be recommend to academic directors in regards to work (they're all professionals that teach on the spare time).

ah well thats cool for books and stuff.

Please take my advice. Go to a community college get a symester or two of good grades and you will get some of those grants and the help you need. Thats if you got a shitty gpa.

Oh and good luck i'd laugh but i fear i'm gonna be in the same boat.

I can do it.  Freelance work is hardly a full-time gig, unless I manage to make it so and then I'd leave GameStop.  Again, if the Art Institute can provide me a gig in my field, as they feel they can, I will also leave GameStop.  But I can't plan on WHAT IF, so I must plan based on what I have on the table in front of me.

Trust me, I'm not excited to be paid 'bout $12/hr to schlep videogames to Ninthings.

Cheebs, I will tell you REAL STORIES.  My Target shenanigans are legendary.

G, community college won't really help me in my field.  Plus, the Art Institute will help me find a job right now once I'm enrolled.

it may not help you in your field but it might get you the help you need and take off some of burden that is gonna hold over your head. And it could help out in the long run. Most all colleges will help you look for work though. Hell most colleges have internship programs. Just look into your options before exhausting  them.

I'm too drained from accepting a retail job to go into detail.  You could always ask Disposable White Guy.  Despite winning Target Team Hero of the Month and a couple of AP certificates, I was just about the most disruptive employee you could hire.

Sex. Backroom Racing Games.  Hide & Seek.  Prank calling the operator.  Embarrassing guests.  Sliding down the conveyor belt head first.  I did it all.

bluemax... I live in the Bay Area now.

G, there is not an institution in a 400 mile radius that comes close to how career oriented the Art Institute of California - San Francisco is for its students.  The graphic design program had 100% of its graduates placed in jobs within 6 mos., and most of them were making 38k+ on the low end of the spectrum (we're talking real slackers).  I've looked a lot of programs and a lot of schools, this one is easily the best for my field in the area and they feel confident they can get me work once I'm enrolled after looking at my book.

Damn, why do you have to work that hard?  I thought you were Jewish.  Don't Jewish kids get money bags from their parents every month?  Sorry for the stereotypes.  I felt like I had to make some in order to become a full fledged member of this forum.

The truth of the matter is, my folks are well off.  And I may have to ask for funds, which I have never, ever done since moving out of the house.  Even in times of need.  I pride myself on taking care of my own debts and bills, despite the fact that my mom could easily swoop in and take care of them.  She always offers and I turn her down.  But I will probably need her assistance for school.  I just don't like borrowing money from my folks.  She worked hard to live very comfortably, and I don't think she owes me anything.

Much props to you, Wilco.  I have a lot of respect for people that are able to take care of their own problems at an early age.  I had many friends in college who bragged about being independent but their parents still pay for a lot of their crap.  Unfortunately, I'm not yet completely financially independent from my folks.  Med school is enough of a burden without having to worry about financial matters.  I could borrow enough for everything but the interest would kill me in the future. I still have to repay my family in the future but at least I don't have to worry about interest.  The tradeoff is that my parents still have some control over my life since I'm not completely independent.

The Fake Shemp

My mom will assist, she won't pay for it and I wouldn't want her to.  She went ahead and put in her paperwork for the Federal Parent PLUS loan, which would be capable of paying my entire tuition - but I want to see what options I can work on besides that.

Tuition will be expensive, so I know I'm going to be working off loans 'till I'm 30.  The Art Institute does have an early payment rewards program, where after five consecutive monthly payments, they will match every month afterwards.  Even if it's just $100 a month, after a few years, that's a few thousand dollars I don't have to pay.

It sucks that tuition is so expensive but at least you're going to a good school.  I have two relatives and some friends who graduated from that school and they're both doing really well.  Rent is scary expensive in the Bay Area too and there aren't even that many housing options.

yes one of his life influences is the 510 area code.

I drive by the Art Institue of Seattle everyday on my way to work and see all the students walking into the building, I don't have the best view of them from personal experiences and also with students at work (one of my assignments last year was a high school).

Will, please prove me wrong. Graduate and do something with your degree.

The Art Institute of SF is a completely different animal from the Art Institute of Seattle. A good chunk of gaming and graphic design companies hire straight from AISF, no questions asked. The same can definitely NOT be said for AIS.

The Art Institute of Seattle and the Art Institute of California - San Francisco, while under the same umbrella, are hardly the same school. :P

One of my real drives is that the graduates do a portfolio show near graduation for the field.  It's a big deal and they hold it in the Ramada conference center.  Lots of hot shots come in, swap cards and such in hopes of finding the next big fashion designer, game designer, interior designer, etc.

One guy in my program apparently did his table as a poker table, and made poker chips and cards that were like real chips and cards, but with his contact information on it.  The design and execution of the whole setup was supposedly awesome and its something people still talk about it.

I want to beat that guy.
PSP

I knew some people who went to AISF, too. They wasted their time and their parents' cash.

In any event, do something worthwhile with your degree, especially seeing how it's a ridiculously expensive program. I believe in you!
