I'm all about open-ended endings. Hell, most of my favorite movies have open-ended endings. If you're saying that I didn't get the movie, you'll have to explain whatever there was to get from it. All of this took about 10 minutes in the movie. The rest was run, get shot at, push the car, start the car, run, oh my god this character got killed, cue in intellectual references about Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Picasso to get intellectuals to care more about what essentially is an action flick, oh my god the door won't open, yeah hit that ****er with that battery, careful you'll get shot, wow he's gonna die, hey the boat is coming. The End. Laughing children, hope, etc.

It's a nicely done action flick with a good set-up, but nothing to fuel any interesting discussions.

I swear, every discussion about this movie turns around : Is it just an action flick or not? Nobody defending the fact that it's more than an action flick is even discussing what the hell the movie is saying.

I don't get why you brought up The Departed in there other than to troll lol. The Departed was far from a "deep" movie, although the Wiki page brings up lots of interesting stuff I missed. That being said, it's still an amazing film

I don't know. As I said after I watched CoM, it's hard for me to choose. This of course is complicated by the fact that I own The Departed and have seen it numerous times (watched the first 30min or so while cleaning the house earlier today lol), while I've seen CoM once.

Perhaps we can agree that both movies are quite masterful in specific areas. The writing/screenplay in The Departed is amazing, and the cinematography in CoM is amazing.

i liked CoM, but man i'm not seein' anything special in it outside of a very well-filmed battle scene and clive owen's performance. the first hour was pure snooze. the dialogue is barely there (and awful in some cases ("pull my finger" is "nobody tosses a dwarf" level bad) and the non-owen performances range from phoned in (julianne moore) to snicker-worthy (the black gal; michael caine the hippie).

Not even writing? As Drinky said, CoM's writing is not that impressive, especially when it's heavy on dialogue not involving the plot/philosophical ideas. Also in terms of acting...come on. The Departed steam rolls it. Outside of Clive Owen being awesome (AS USUAL) the cast is quite average.

I really need to see CoM again. I do remember being somewhat bored in the first half of the film, as Drinky mentioned, but the last 30 minutes were so mind-numbingly amazing that I walked out extremely impressed and entertained by the film, forgetting about the crawling pace in the beginning of the film. But I've always said I enjoyed The Departed more.

TD is definitely the more enjoyable movie.

The first 30min of CoM are mixed - some of it is cool, and some drags. But imo the movie kicks into full gear once

Children of Men may be overrated, but it's easily better than The Departed, which is completely forgettable. And who is badmouthing Running Scared? That's a fun B flick if there ever was one!

Pity Oscars don't make it any less forgettable. The Departed does not stick with you and nobody will be talking about it two years from now. It's this year's A Beautiful Mind.

Again, not to sound like Dark Shake or anything, but I loved the fucking Departed and thought it was a pretty damn good crime thriller.

And I beg to differ. People will remember this film, mainly because of the ending, and the fact that Scorsese's name is attached to it.

Most of the dialogue and acting (and editing, as usual, is really good, Schoonmauer strikes home every time) is leagues better than in Children of Men.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely like both films, and Children of Men should have an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. However, my favorite of the two is undoubtedly the Departed.

Ill endorse Running Scared. I award it my Guilty Pleasure of 2006 award, that I just made up right now. Its such an odd clusterfuck of a movie (even crazier when you actually listen to Wayne Kramer tell what he was going for in the film, some form of twisted Brothers Grimm fairy tale featuring the scum of the earth), but there is just something about it that clicks with me. And I actually liked Paul Walker in it, go figure.

RE: The Departed
1. The editing award was most definately NOT deserved. The editing was one of the worst things about the film.
2. My opinion of the film has pretty much settled now. I was singing from the rooftops after my theatrical viewings, but after some time passing, and revisiting it on DVD, my opinion dropped slightly. Still would give it an 8.5 or 9 depending on the day, but I dont think its a film that will be remembered, and it most certainly is a minor blip on the radar that is Scorsese's fantastic career. People will remember him for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. Not his minor, commercial successes like Cape Fear, The Aviator, or The Departed.

I thought I was gonna HATE Running Scared after the opening scene, which is hands down the worst in the film. The scene with the drug deal gone sour, I mean. It was way too goddamn stylized and the dialogue and acting were terrible. Thankfully, the movie never rises to those levels of awful again. And some of the scenes in the movie are downright unforgettable. The pedo scene always comes to mind.

Alfonso Cuaron is one of my favorite modren directors (right up there with Pedro Almodovar, Richard Linklater and Wong Kar-Wai), but yeah, I agree with you 100% on Children of Men.
