The power of the cell
« on: April 21, 2007, 06:25:24 PM »
is a bunch of bullshit?  I have several days of break and I'm playing with my PS3 for the first time.  I've got VF5, Resistance, NBA2k7, RR7and Motorstorm.  I'm halfway through with Resistance so far and I'm not much impressed so far.  I've dabbled in the rest of the games but nothing really impresses me either.  None of the games look better than 360 games.   If anything, the 360 seems to have better looking games.  NBA2k7 on the 360 has a much better framerate & anti-aliasing.  VF5's environments are worse than DOA4's.  Gears of War destroys Resistance.  Motorstorm looks great but the game plays just OK and it takes forever to load on just the vehicle selection screen.  RR7 is the one game that looks better than the 360 equivalent because it is in 1080p.  However, RR7 doesn't have a perfectly smooth framerate like RR6 did.  Altogether, the PS3 has been quite a disappointment.  I would have waited for a price drop if I know that's what I was getting.  The most fun I've had with the PS3 is watching Blu-Ray versions of The Prestige and Descent.  I wouldn't have paid 600 for a blu-ray machine though.  Where the hell do PS3 fanboys get this nonsense that the PS3 will have groundbreaking visuals that can make the system last for 10 years?  No company is consistently better than Sony at getting people to believe in their bs about the power of their system, and that's why Sony will never lose.

PS3 is a bluray player with tacked on gaming. The Cell is about as overhyped as the emotion engine was for ps2.

That said, I still want one when good games start coming, I could care less which format wins this hd war movie wise...

I hate hearing that crap about how the PS3 is capable of Pixar-like graphics.  The most popular proof that those fanboys use now is Little Big Planet.  WTF?  The soccer ball in LBP isn't even freaking round, like a true soccer ball!  Pixar graphics, my ass.  All those companies that made CG hardware would be dead if a $600 machine can render in real time Hollywood level graphics.

VF5 has never been about the graphics and wasn't designed for the PS3 specifically. Im not defending the PS3 so much as defending VF5.

MAF, I get what you mean but VF3 was the most amazing looking game for its time.  No other arcade game has ever blown me away with its graphics as much as VF3.  I guess I just expected more from the VF team since their game arrived a year after DOA4.  The animations in VF5 are great but the plastic sheen is a little weird.  Most of the stages are also kinda bland except for that stage with the rain water.  More importantly, I need a joystick to truly enjoy the game.  I'm sick of the snobbish attitudes of Japanese companies that think that American gamers aren't smart enough to need premium joysticks.  Paying $50 extra to import a joystick truly sucks.

People who buy consoles at launch suck.

I only bought the PS3 at launch because this summer would be the last time in a while that I would get to enjoy games.   Next summer, I'll have no vacation and I'll have to prepare for my 1st medical board examination.

The Cell should come into its own a couple of years down the line. Developers in general have been reeling with parralel nature when it comes to developing for the platform (Also the way the SPEs handle threads and workloads ). Though, the PS3 needs to show its advantages now not two years down the line. Also, remember...the console has only been out for 5 months!

The problem is, will developers care enough to do that when the system is very likely to remain in a distant third? Look at GameCube. Only Capcom ever tried to maximize what the system could do, mainly since it was the third wheel of the generation most dev's didn't see a need nor the money potential to attempt to push it to it's limits since so few owned it.

Thats also a huge issue. This generation seems to be mainly about keeping costs down (look at SE, they confirmed that their business model is going to center around re releasing older games).

These games that take advantage of Cell are obviously going to be coming from 1st/2nd party dev houses. 3rd party? Nope. It also looks like the 360 will be the lead platform in most cases. If the company has trouble with the PS3 version...release the 360 version and delay the PS3 version a month or two (for optimization).

Sony is between a rock and a hard place for the PS3 (With pricing and games/3rd Party support).
