Why isn't Timothy Dalton in more movies?

I just realized this after watching Hot Fuzz in which he is the main lead after nick frost and simon pegg as the head honcho bad guy of sorts. He stole basically every scene he was in. And he was probably one of the best actors to portray bond.

Yet I never see him in anything! Hell Hot Fuzz is the first leading role I have seen with him since License To Kill. Where is this guy? He is a god damn good actor.

I just know that a lot of people hated him as Bond.  His Bond movie was all right.  I thought that Dalton was at least better than Moore as Bond.

that has nothing to do with his acting abilities which are fantastic. He plays the slimy villian in hot fuzz just as well as bond.

Err, what?  He was the one who chose not to do GoldenEye...he was contracted for three films but asked to be let out of his contract.

Even still, he is almost universally looked at as the worst Bond.  If that's not a total anchor dropped on your career, I don't know what is.  I'll admit, it's not his fault the Bond movies in the 80s sucked total ass, but who else would bare the brunt of the blame aside from the face of Bond at the time?  He's a total victim of circumstance, but his stint as Bond sunk him.

I know this. But he had to have been influenced by the poor reception of both his films, both by fans and critics. And it wouldnt surprise me in the least if by the time GE rolled around, after 6 years, Cubby Broccoli would *suggest* Dalton bow out.

To people like me, Dalton is a fantastic actor and easily one of the better Bonds. But that is the view of the extreme minority. Most casuals will see him as the "bad Bond", and most film studios would see him as a risk, not an asset.

That's not the only possible scenario.  Dalton probably knew immediately after his last Bond flick that he was on a sinking ship.

They wanted Brosnan in 1986, and by 1995, they still had a hard-on for him. And whose to say that GE wasn't written in say 1990, when Dalton was still most definately Bond?

On the commentary they said in 1994 the script was still written for Dalton but when he bowed out they changed some of Bond's dialouge to be more light to fit Brosnan. So up until official pre-production the script was made for Dalton with the intention he would come back for one more.
