A lot of people who know me personally know that I am a huge Flash Gordon fan.  I'm talking almost all aspects of the character, from the Alex Raymond strips, to the Buster Crabbe serials and including the awe-inspiring Mike Hodges 1980 film.  When I first moved to Los Angeles, the first thing I brought with me (other than a sleeping bag and two suitcases of clothes) was a Flash Gordon bobble head that I bought at Universal Studios years prior.  I'm not looking forward to the Sci-Fi Channel television series, for a lot of reasons, but it will see Flash get a legitimate DVD reissue for the good 'ole United States of Awesome.

I got in on DVD well after the initial print of Flash Gordon was sold out, as it was one of the first titles available for the format.  A new REGION 1 copy of Flash Gordon would have cost me a pretty penny, so I found a REGION 2 print in Portuguese that forces you to select English as the main language at the start menu.  But not only is Flash coming home to DVD in a big way, he gets arguably the best cover art of all-time:

If this doesn't give you a boner, then I don't know what does!

They need to edit out the Alex Ross signature. Detracts from the piece.

Holy shit.  Mike "Croupier" Hodges directed this?  I've got to see it.

Wow, I think we really were made for each other, Will. :o  I love Flash Gordon.  The movie is easily in my top 10.

And hot damn.  That cover art is so freaking badass.  I actually had to make sure that was the real cover because I can't hardly believe they got Alex Ross to do such a boner-inducing piece of artwork.  There is justice in this world.

I'd love it if they made a poster out of that.  I have a mint condition theatrical one sheet from 1980, but sadly, it pales in comparison to this.

When I get some extra cash, I really want to decorate my room with framed movie posters and that poster is one I want to add (I definitely want the Alien and Army of Darkness one sheets, still deciding what else I want).  You lucky bastard.

Not directed at me, but...

I wish I did. Collecting one-sheets has been a fairly recent hobby of mine, one I started about 3 years ago. So I mostly have newer films. The only old ones I have are a Vertigo one, an ESB one, and a TGTBATU one.

I haven't heard anything about it other than it starts this July. What have you heard that has curbed your interest? We need a good space opera tv show out there and was hopeful for FG to be that. BSG is too gloomey and gritty(though I quite enjoy it)

I'm not going to lie.  I've been involved with some development stuff for Flash Gordon and this TV show has pretty much killed any shot for it to happen.  I can only wish for its early demise, so that in a few years I can resurrect the project.

you are writing a script for a FG movie? They already picked it up for an entire 22 episode series you know. Even just that would hurt the chances of your reboot for quite some time.

The script has been done for years.  I was well aware of the television series eons ago.  Had some good breaks when the script was completed, but had some amazing breaks when last year too that just happened a bit too late.  I'm knowledgeable on the licensing situation, so I was a bit excited when it dropped off someone's radar, but then it landed right in Sci-Fi's lap shortly thereafter.

oh? Well then whoever is in charge, how'd you get them to read it?

And like I said a full 22 season has got to hurt chances, if it doesnt get picked up for a second season I doubt they would think there is enough interest for a film. And if it does get picked up for season 2, why do a movie? It's a no win situation. I would love to read your script though if you still have it.

I didn't.  It's a pretty long, and complicated story, but I got some breaks in regards to people who could do something with it due to the crazy nature of licensing and who was producing and what have you.  I won't go into a lot of details.

And of course the full season hurts my chances - it's dead.  It's been dead for months.  That said, I've discussed it with a few parties, and if the TV show tanks, it might benefit my script.  But we're talking a few years down the line.

I've promised a couple of people not to leak it on the off chance that we do something with it in the future, so no go, Cheebs.

I was conceived right around the time that Flash Gordon came out in theaters (December 1980), which lead to one of my grandmas campainging long and hard to get me named Flash for some reason. It didn't work out (thank you, mom and dad!), but it's stuck with me as a nick-name. I'll definitely be picking up this film, for nostalgia's sake.

I hate to bring this up, but anyone else think SciFi has been putting out shit content lately? I tried to watch PainKiller Jane and its just god awful. Thank god Dresden was good and Eureka, but PKJ sucks ass. Are they trying to save money or something?

As for a flash series thats awesome but at the same time I'd rather have a movie. Unless the series is really taken seriously or goes down the Dr Who route. I dont think I'd be happy with it. And it'd have to have some pretty high quality standards to get the attention of a new audiance. Which SciFi struggles with getting for one of the best damn shows on TV, BSG.

Solo, do you have a white border ESB poster? Mine is damaged and I'm looking for another if its vintage.

I don't think the show is going to be any good.  One of the things I was holding on hope for was that it took Sci-Fi forever to find a show runner even (the main producer muscle behind a production like this) and that the cast and crew came together haphazardly.  Either they're desperate for genre content for some reason or it was one of the best pitches ever.  Despite even that, the show seems to have been cobbled together to meet some mandatory date and I'm not sure that's the best way to go about things.

the only decent original programming they have now is BSG.

All they do on weekdays is air endless re-runs of X-Files and Enterprise.

There is so much good sci-fi syndication out there they should buy up instead, ugh. Sci-Fi used to show the original star trek with newly filmed intro's with Leonord Nimoy, it rocked. Now they rather show 4 hours of Enterprise 7 days a week.

You've not seen Eureka? or Dresden Files? Those two shows rocked. Eureka is coming back in the summer thank god.

But yeah the channel has turned into shit. Special Unit 2, Jake 2.0, Enterprise (got good towards the end), and all the other bullshit scifi sucks ass. I blame Universal, and what the fucks up with ECW on fucking SciFi? MEH

Not to mention who is funding the god awful SciFi original movies? They are so horrible its not funny. They could use all that money for a good series or something.

I still hold sci-fi channel was better when all it aired was star trek movies, godzilla movies, b-movie sci-fi stuff that got lost in time, and re-runs of the 70's battlestar galactica and the original star trek

Those were the days damnit each day was a marathon of a certain show. It rocked, granted I love tuesdays and Stargate SG1. But nothing can replace Quantum Leap, Original BSG, and Cheezy ass StarTrek. The biggest sin scifi ever commited was not getting TNG and DS9 on the channel, instead they let Spike and G4 take it.
