What do you think of cheating?
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:20:33 PM »
http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/apr2007/bs20070430_110466.htm

A bunch of Duke MBA students got caught cheating and it's pretty big news around the country because Duke is so prestigious academically.   What do you guys think about cheating?  Do you have any funny story about cheating?

Personally, the closest I came to cheating was copying homework in High School.  There was no need to cheat for tests in High School and repercussions were too high in College.  One time, on a College final, I was looking away while thinking about the question and I got a stern warning to keep my eyes on my own test.  I was like "wtf, i'm not even cheating" but it was kinda scary how they keep track of every single student.  The funniest story I've heard about cheating is that a 2nd year student in my current school was caught cheating on her Medical Board examination. She went to the bathroom for a long time and people saw that her legs were facing the wrong direction for a woman.

I once let this chick take one of my rough drafts of an unused essay for AP Government (I tend to write one paper or two, throw one away) for a blow job once.

the easiest kind of cheating is prob just some kind of morse code thing on your skin somewhere.  first beeps, first diget of number, second beeps second digit, then however many beeps for a, b, c, d, or e.

only way to not cheat is to have writing finals.

i don't even really know much about that, but if someone wants to cheat, there has to be a friend who's very smart and studies a lot that somehow helps them, if of course the professor takes the right precautions.

I think cheaters are the biggest scum in school. Ever since middle school I never had much respect for cheaters. I've cheated only once in my life, and I felt absolutely guilt doing it. How anyone thinks they can cheat constantly without feeling guilty I don't know. I remember the kids trying to cheat off of me in history in MS. Christ. I CAN'T REMEMBER THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES GARRETT CAN YOU HELP ME?!

Wow, it's hard to believe that kind of stuff happens even in High School.  How come I never meet hos like that?

That's why my undergrad school didn't allow calculators for chem tests.   My current school doesn't allow any student to have any electronic device during a test, including digital watches or cellphones.   Did your school warn you about not putting stuff like Chem formulas in your graphing calculator?  What would have happened if you had been caught?

i disagree, i don't cheat just because it's a pride thing, but i don't necessarily disagree with people cheating.  for huge major exams and shit like that for grad school...  ok i understand, but even then, if they get some other job they have to be interviewed, and if they're so fucking clever to cheat and get by all of that, then they'll probably be fine in their field.... i just hope none become surgeons... but then again to pass all of that it's practically impossible to cheat all of the time.

I only cheated on French tests in elementary school.

With some of my papers, I don't cite as much as I should. Though, I usually have more citations than anyone else.

I thought this thread was about relationships.  I have two completely different views for the two.

Cheating on tests is fine.  Fuck school, imo.

I dunno. I COULD have cheated at Spanish in HS, which I was flunking in the first semester, but I managed to bring my F to a C and I was PROUD of it because I worked my fucking ass off for it. The following semester I worked so hard I was able to exempt my exam and that really made me feel good. Cheating doesn't allow things like that.

Yeah, I may have trouble managing just to get by when it comes to math, but that's a lot better on my conscience than cheating. I have turned in multiple tests where I answered nothing on it or only a few questions. I felt bad about it and it lowered my self esteem, but I felt good that I never had to resort to cheating my way through.

That's why it's kinda scary that there are still people cheating at my school because they are training to be physicians.  It's better to get a F in school than to get a F in real life when you're treating a patient.  But I guess all the ethics classes didn't teach people much.

What was that morse thing you were talking about?  Are you talking about tapping on the skin?  I guess my undergrad school was concerned about that kind of cheating because almost all the science exams were written and not multiple choice.   For the few times that I took a multiple choice exam, they also had multiple versions of the tests so you can't cheat unless your eyes can see 4 seats away from you.

An acquaintance got a friend of his to write his business ethics paper. Since it's business ethics, maybe he was acting correctly.  :lol

One thing I never understood was, how come you have to memorize formula's? How come you can't use formulas as a reference?

In the real world, it's likely you'll be able to use math using formulas so how come we can't in school? You can't solve the problem without knowing how to work the formula in the first place.

I haven't done it much in college besides tiny cheat sheets for formulas that I couldn't remember, but in high school cheating was like a sport. Especially during senior year. I had an economics class as an elective and during our exams I'm pretty sure that AT LEAST half the class cheated. :lol

In the same economics class the teacher gave the exact same exam to all his classes. Since we were his last class for the day, someone would always get the test answers from a student in one of his previous classes. Throughout the test the cheat sheet made it all the way from the left side of the class to the right side.

Also, some kids in the back corners of the room would flip through their notes and even the textbook without him seeing. I think he knew that no one liked his class, so he didn't pay much attention to us when we took our exams. :lol

I've found personally that when I learn forumlas for the first time, I don't necessarily memorize them until after completing the class after that.  that's because the earlier forumlas are expected to be known, so you constantly use them in the material to come.  so you're a master of 2 classes ago....   that's how it works for me anyway ;(

And this is why colleges use the SAT.

It's generally not a good idea when they let you come into the test with all the formulas because then the tests are going to be 10 times harder.  In my school, they let you bring in a formula sheet for all the math/physics tests and the mean score is usually 50% or less. They don't let people bring in formula sheets for Chem classes though because I think part of  learning Chem is memorizing all the different reactions.

Yeah. :lol

I went to what's considered NYC's best public high school though. Most of us did good on the SATs. When I was in HS 1600 was the highest you could get on the SATs. They changed it up the year after I last took it. My score was a 1280. Most of the school got over 1300. A good amount of people got over 1500.
