But if the cells are still alive, why can't doctors revive someone who has been dead for an hour? Because once the cells have been without oxygen for more than five minutes, they die when their oxygen supply is resumed. It was that "astounding" discovery, Becker says, that led him to his post as the director of Penn's Center for Resuscitation Science, a newly created research institute operating on one of medicine's newest frontiers: treating the dead.

I"ve actually done some research on this subject.  The goal of the research was to extend the treatment period for a trauma patient by lowering the temperature of the brain.  Usually, the brain is the first organ to go when the body is having a circulation/oxygen problem.  By cooling the brain, you can somehow lower the oxygen requirements which give you more time to send someone to the hospital.  The only difference from the way we do it compared to the article is that we are attempting to lower the CSF's temp, not the blood's.

My bad.  I have to go through all your old posts and practice until I can get you to be unsure who's making the posts, you or me.  Can we completely switch identites so that I can go to lunch with TVC & Greedy Cervantes while you sit in class 8 hrs a day?   :lol

Man, we're going to be creating real life zombies soon.

Fucking medical science. Dr. Know-it-all is going to learn his lesson when Aunt May tears out his esophagus.

Wrong.  I'm the artist formally know as MAF. You're the artist formerly known as MAF.

From the free dictionary,

formally - officially, with official authorization; "the club will be formally recognized"

formerly- at an earlier time, once

These two are often mixed up in speech. If you are doing something in a formal manner, you are behaving formally; but if you previously behaved differently, you did so formerly
