Macs suck ass.
« on: May 02, 2007, 04:58:27 PM »
Anyone who argues with this is a damn fool. Where the fuck is Right-Click? Where the fuck is the option to get rid of that shit at the bottom of the screen? The monitor itself is fucking colossal, and the thing is pretty powerful, but fuck.

once there's a two button mouse hooked up to a mac I dont totally hate it. For all their crap about ease of use there sure are some weird rituals you have to go through when using programs and cds n such.

I like apple hardware. Its sleek, its neat. I dont like apple software going off my past experiences with it. OSX or whatever seems to have as much weird shit as Mac fans claim Windows Operating Systems have. I mean if you dont have a two button mouse youre keystroking around the OS, which is honestly fucking archaic. I know my keystrokes but id like to think IN THE FUTURE we wont need to remember keystrokes to do something I can do on another OS with a mouse button press.

But even if you get a two button mouse running programs and cds still has this weird drag to trashbin process or some shit wtf. Why not just keep stuff clean for me.

This isnt to say Mac doesnt have good ideas, im sure there's some neat things OSX does that Windows may not, and vice versa, but god damn if I dont find the Mac OS fucking weird as a traditional Windows user. Apple should honestly be developing operating systems for people like ME in mind. I dont WANT to learn a bunch of new ways to do shit, its obnoxious and elitist to think I should have to.

You don't have to drag a CD to the trash bin to make it eject.  You can just right click it and hit eject.  Or if it's a mounted object, like a zip or archive file, you can right click it to unmount it.  OSX mounts all archives as drives.

Why the mounting, why do I need to unmount shit.

Actually I was wrong, it doesn't mount zip files.  It just dumps the contents on the desktop.  As far as mounting archives, that's just the way the filesystem does things.  Archives effectively "plug in" to the existing filesystem when they mount.  I think it works well enough visually since when you open the finder, the archive is then listed with all the drives, making it easier to move the contents to where you want them unpacked on the hard drive.  And then in the finder, the unmount button is right next to the archive name.

Why do I need to do this? As a customer and not a mac fanatic, why would I want to do this?

I think thats my main problem with Mac OS, its the idea that I have to be into the lingo and the process to really know wtf is going on.

I dunno.  I had to teach myself everything and I didn't find it very difficult.  It's mostly pretty intuitive, although there are some tricks you have to learn when doing certain things with the Finder.

You can actually switch between all 3 systems on the fly?  How hard is it to install Windows XP on a MAC?  Can you use a top of the line videocard like the 8800GTX on a MAC?  I love the way Macs look but the OS is too unintuitive for someone who's always been using Windows.

I think it comes down to the level of technical involvement MOST people want with an OS. Most consumers dont want to spend time to learn an OS, and unless the Mac OS starts showing signs that apple is accepting that reality they will continue to be a step behind in marketshare.

That screenshot was made using VMware.  I was able to switch between all three OSes on the fly, but IIRC, I couldn't get my mouse to pick up in LInux, hence using a word processor to spell the magic words.

Install XP or Vista on a Mac is really easy.  Unless you don't have an Intel Mac in which case it's not possible.

nVidia has (unsurprisingly) been slacking on Mac lately.  I believe 78/7900s are the highest with support.  ATIs go up to 1950XTXs, though.

There's a lot to learn when changing OSes, but it's never really that bad.

How is learning OS X any more difficult than learning XP?  It's just that people have been using Windows OSes for years.

The OS switching is pretty impressive.  It's pretty col that you can use Windows for gaming and then the MAC OS for something else.  What do they do to allow the user to switch to a different OS?  The videocard support kinda sucks.  The main thing that has always been holding me back from buying a MAC is the weak gaming support.

Well, in the screenshots above I am virtualizing other OSes.  In OS X you do that with an application called Parallels.  It allows you to run one OS inside the other.  In addition, I can use Apple's own Boot Camp software to switch OSes at boot time.  You hold down the alt key when the system is booting and you get a prompt asking which OS to launch.

When you virtualize one OS inside another, there's, of course, a perf hit.  When I boot into XP or Vista (and leave OS X off the plate) I get full perf.

EDIT:  ALso, T234, Safari does have tabbed browsing.  Check preferences or help or something.  I don't use Safari.  Try command-t or something.  I think it might have to be enabled in prefs, though.

That's pretty extreme hate.  Macs don't suck that much even if you don't like using them.  Aren't WebTV users the worst posters in every forum?

Thanks for answering the questions, TVC.  I think I'm going to strongly consider a MAC the next time I get a new computer.  I want to get a MAC mostly for its looks.  I actually spend quite a lot of money on my PC cases but they never seem to look quite as good as the MACs.

BTW, are there any Macs in the Microsoft offices?  I'm just curious to know.

I'm sure the people that make Office for Mac occasionally have to use one.

Actually, J. Allard ONLY used Apple computers.  At least in the Xbox 1 days, which is when I was told that.

Im just being flip in regards to the webtv comment.

The reality of the situation is this. Microsoft did a good job raising people on Windows. Mac enthusiasts cannot expect entire generations of people raised on Windows to suddenly become inspired to learn and switch to entirely new Operating Systems that fundamentally do the same thing in a roundabout fashion. Add to this the lackluster support from industry giants who DO matter, and you've got a big ol pile of 'better change my business strategy'.

Its clear Apple has realized this by introducing subtle things like Itunes (which DOES have a windows attitude to its form and function) and the ability to boot Microsoft Operating Systems on their hardware. Once people buy a mac and slap Vista on it, Apple is in an even better position to subtlely introduce these users to mac-centric schools of thought.
