Guitar isn't as hard as people make it out to be
« on: May 03, 2007, 12:57:54 PM »
Welp. I just finished my last guitar class of the year. I got me an A. Compared to other instruments, guitar has a steep learning curve, but it's not as bad as people say it is.

My hands didn't hurt that much unless I was doing a really awkward finger position. I already formed calouses on my fingers, so it didn't hurt when I started out either. Guess that's what happens when one plays so many games or does too much yard work or something.

Finals.

All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't take anyone's suggestion and get a left handed guitar. Changing chords with the right hand for a lefty would be distinguished mentally-challenged.

So you're not strumming with your dominant hand?  You better be more ambidextrous than most or you're gonna run into some problems.

Wouldn't it be harder if I had to change chords with my non dominant?

That's the standard.  Whatever you feel more comfortable with, but I can't imagine picking well with my non-dominant hand.  Moving around on the fretboard isn't much of a problem, however.

Picking isn't much of a problem for me. I rarely use a pick. My teacher taught me to use both my finger and pick so I learn how to use my non dominant well.

my problem has always been tuning the guitar since i'm deaf in my left ear. But i agree guitar is fun to pick up and play. I only remember a few songs by memory but i can try and play other songs by tab. Bass guitar is fun too. I want to get an acustic one day.

Well, I learned how to play trombone in 6th grade. In the summer before 7th grade, I got a sax and learned how to play over the summer and got all the basics I learned for the trombone the previous year down for the sax. When I got back to school my teacher said I have continue with trombone, and if I want to play Sax I have to start over in the beginner's class, so I just stuck with trombone. At that time I was playing 2 instruments at the same time I guess.

Oh ok. I asked because I've been thinking about learning to play the piano along with the guitar once I'm done with finals, but it seems like that would just make things more difficult. Maybe I should just stick with the guitar for now.

mmm, maybe, maybe not.  guess you just gotta gauge your aptitude for them both as well as how much time you have to practice both instruments.

Learning to play the piano is easy once you learn the notes you are playing.  It all translates to the piano.  Piano chords can have a few more notes, but if you use the same notes as you use on the guitar, it will play the same.

Beezy, you can get a good guitar from wal mart for like 100 dollars man. These days, most guitars made are pretty good, so it's a good bargain for a beginner. There's no reason at all for a beginner to invest that much into an instrument.

Not really. You have to have flexible fingers and the learning curve IS steeper compared to other instruments.

Trombone, Sax, Tuba, all of which I have had experience with. I played Trombone for a good 7 or so years, and it was much easier to get into compared to guitar. Sax was even easier for me.

With guitar, you have to get the chord fingers perfectly, even down to the position they are on the fretboard. All the other instruments I've played are much simpler. Guitar is complex and requires much more practice to get in good shape.

I don't have experience with any of those, but I'd be surprised if they were easier.  it takes maybe 15 minutes of practice a day to get base proficient in guitar.

Well they were definitely easier for me to learn. Guitar is more about precision than all of those. Plus, even when you learn all the chords, you're going to have to learn how to play them all in one go, and in different rhythm times too. That takes a lot of practice when it comes to your hands. That itself is more complex than the entire year of brass instrument instruction I received in my first year in middle school. With brass and other mouth bass instruments, all you gotta do is blow in and change the rate you blow into it. Especially compared to trombone, which is made up of 7 positions. That shit is easy compared to guitar.

I defer to your experience, but still I have never heard anyone describe learning the guitar as difficult.  If learning the guitar were difficult, there wouldn't be nearly as many proficient at it.

Well, it's not that it's difficult, it's just that not all people are made for it. Compared to the other instruments I've played guitar is a step up in terms of learning curve, and requires much more dedication.

all my friends that learned guitar learned it becauase they were sick of learning another instrument too slow.  they could play a full song easily in a few months.  No lessons.

drums are the HARDEST (if you can call learning an instrument hard) instrument to learn in my opinion and my friends' opinions.  It requires a lot more coordination.
